Hi all - my daughter will be attending USC in Fall and I would like to get her a new computer for graduation. She has her heart set on the Apple Mac Book Air but looking at the requirements that USC has posted it looks like it may not be sufficient. Does anyone know or have experience using the entry level Mac Book Air on campus? Any problems with connectivity etc.?

I’d say students use about half and half. I know plenty of people who use Mac’s and I know plenty of people who use PC’s.

What’s her major? If she’s business or computer science, then a mac might not be the best idea. If she’s into graphics, it’s probably the better option. For most majors it doesn’t matter. And if she is in a major where it matters, there are computer labs all over campus and if she’s taking a class that requires a specific system, she’ll probably have access to a special computer lab, so it isn’t the end of the world.

If you’re really concerned, I would contact the department your daughter will be studying in and ask if they have a recommendation.

Thanks AUGirl - very helpful. She’s going to be an Education major so I don’t think she’ll need a tremendous amount of computing power. However I just wanted to make sure that if I shell out money for a new laptop she’ll be able to connect to the university network!

Yeah. She won’t have any issues with the network. Well, she won’t have issues because of her computer. Sometimes USC internet just likes to be stubborn and slow. lol

And if it helps, one of the girls I knew last year was an Elementary Education major and she had a mac. :)

When Mcnairs, Carolina, and Leiber scholarship students get free computer, they have choice of Dell (at least our year) or Mac so apple is definitely supported.
