Main Common App essay -- 650 words too long??

I know the adcom will enjoy a good essay no matter the length, but I know that it is wise to set a reasonable limit... Would 650 words be too long?

Ok, there is no “easy” answer to this question. However, the number 650 does seem a tad bit long for the main essay. With that said, 650 might be the perfect length if your essay demands that many words. Normally, a school will only get annoyed with a “slightly longer essay” if it uses alot of unneeded words and just isn’t concise. So, its a hard call without seeing your essay.

Ummmmm yes. I’m pretty sure the common app specifically says you can’t/shouldn’t go over 500 words. In fact in the online application there’s a character limit…

“Please write an essay (250 words minimum) on a topic of your choice or on one of the options listed below. This personal essay helps us to become acquainted with you as a person and student, apart from courses, grades, test scores, and other objective data. It will also demonstrate your ability to organize your thoughts and express yourself.”

It doesn’t specify a limit and you upload a document anyway, so there’s no character limit.

I am not sure but I read somewhere that a good number is around 750, but as long as it stays interesting and makes a point it won’t matter if it is a little under or over 650.
