Major Changes in SAT

Does anyone know if current sophomores will have to take the new SAT?

New format will be released March 2016 so current sophomores will take current format. Sophomores will also take current format of PSAT but this year’s freshmen will take new PSAT in Oct 2015.

Honestly, this makes me sad. I loathe that they’re removing much of the vocabulary from the test - I only have the vocabulary I do today because of SAT preparation.
I hope it helps students, though, I honestly do. I’m just glad I’ll be in college before it’s implemented.

I’m curious how they are going to define which vocabulary words are important and which are not. I recall having a few favorite ridiculously obscure words back when I was studying, but I saw many of the words I studied in my college reading. When my daughter went through an SAT vocab list, I thought overall it was very worthwhile for her–there were quite a few words on that SAT vocab list which I feel every well-educated adult should know, and she didn’t know them. With the dumbing down of the SAT, it may be a hard sell to get my 8th grader to learn these words, but as an aspiring writer she should know them.

If anyone remembers from the last major SAT/PSAT overhaul . . . should current 9th graders expect to see a sample or practice PSAT before taking the real one in October 2015, when it will count for National Merit purposes? Or will there really be no way to prepare for that (aside from the booklet they give you a few weeks prior)?

I hope that the test will be made computer-adaptative… if the 3rd-gen SAT could be taken on a computer.
