Major: Computer Science. Minor: ?

Hey everyone, I'm almost finished with my freshman year at the University of Alabama, and I am pretty sure I'm going to stick with my Computer Science major.

However, I've been pretty indecisive about a minor. I've decided to pick up an easy math minor (since it only requires two extra classes), but I really want to minor in another area. Specifically, I've been looking at either a physics minor, or an art minor in digital design.

So, of the two minors I'm looking at, which minor would be more beneficial to a CS major? Or, maybe you have a suggestion not listed here. Thanks in advance!

Get that math minor for sure.

Also, get either a physics, business, or economics minor.

Wow, your university is generous on minors, my alma mater only allowed two “double-counted” courses, so any minor meant at least 6 courses outside your major. Anyway, math is a good minor, but “two extra courses” don’t actually mean much.

Pick something that’ll be interesting to you. Digital design sounds interesting to me, and from a skills point of view, physics wouldn’t teach anything really new (the problem solving skills you’ll get out of your major in CS and minor in math already; knowledge of the theory at that level won’t make you stand out from others). Whatever you pick as a minor, don’t stick to the easiest, basic courses, try to take the more advanced stuff that best fits your interest.

Minors are really pretty meaningless.

Pick up the math minor since it’s convenient and should (theoretically) make you a better developer down the road.

Otherwise, take classes in something you find interesting or compelling, because the last thing you want to do is damage your GPA over some extraneous coursework on the false assumption that those classes will actually matter. Personally, in addition to my program’s built-in math/Physics minor, I took courses in Latin, Roman history, and Creative Writing.
