So I am planning on to changing my major and Im confused between CMPE and ME. I have talked to many people from both the majors and from what I have heard from them, and the advisors, I think I like both equally. I am currently a junior so I feel like its a bit late in the game that Im changing my major so whatever decision I make has to be asap.
I am a chemE major currently and I have taken almost all the general classes. I feel like I will be wasting my classes (almost 3/4 classes worth maybe 12 credit hours) that I took and are not required for CMPE and thats why its a good option to go with ME since Im already a junior. Also I have heard people saying that ME is a bit less work compared to CMPE. And its probably going to be better for me since I have no prior coding experience except for CS1371 that Im taking right now.
Should I take these points into consideration and just change to ME even if I like both?
Any suggestions are welcomed!
FYI, computer engineering is normally abbreviated CE or ECE (electrical and computer engineering). I am not sure if GT uses CMPE abbreviation though.
Mechanical engineers work with Solid Works and other CAD tools to design a wide variety of products such as cars, appliances, computers, toys and medical devices. Computer engineering is a more narrow field of study. Computer engineers are either designing integrated circuit chips, or printed circuit boards for computers. Mechanical engineers have very good job options in many sectors including: automotive industry, aerospace industry, computer and electronics industry, medical devices industry. computer engineers, often work for companies like Apple, Intel, or AMD, so either computer design firms or semiconductor firms that design chips for computers. There are less and less of these companies. Its a mature industry. Mechanical engineering is way more flexible, but if you have a strong interest in computers, stick with your strong interest. As long as you have enough money to stay for all the requirements that are different from chemical engineering , your original major.
You could also consider electrical engineering, as its a bit more broadly focused than computer engineering. Electrical
engineers can focus on controls, robotics, networks, power electronics and other fields.
hope that did not confuse you more! Good luck.
Funny enough, I’m currently a sophomore in ME and about to switch majors to EE. If you want to go to ME, make sure you really enjoy working with CAD like solidworks and building/designing in general.
