Major for non profit

I want to major in communications and economics. I would go to a school with a good communications program so it wouldn't be a joke. Now if I wanted to go into non profit, would I be able to do that with those degrees? I have some connections with non profit, and I don't know if that would be my career, but it would be a good option out of school. Would my majors be ok for non profit?

It would depend on the focus of the nonprofit. Do not narrow your focus to your potential job market. Major in the field that most interests you, the job opportunities will emerge that utilize your skills and mindset. There are many noble efforts by for profit corporations, don’t discount them for doing good in your future career. You can earn your salary with a for profit company and do volunteer work. btw- most hospitals are nonprofit, consider health related occupations if your primary goal is working for a nonprofit organization. It can be tough to get a job in a nonprofit when the economy is down- your salary may be dependent on donations.

I don’t know if I only want to do non profit, but I have major connections in the non profit field in Chicago. I’m wondering if my majors would be able to be applicable to non profit

Then ask around at the particular non-profits you have connections to and are interested in to see what particular majors they’d be looking for assuming they even care about the major for the positions you’d be interested in. You’d have to think through the types of positions you’d want to do at the non-profits since there are different positions at them.

I’ll ask around, but do they use advertising and pr at non profit places?

I’m a newspaper editor, and judging from the volume of press releases from nonprofits that fill my inbox every morning, I would say definitely “yes” as to PR.

Good fundraising/development people are always in demand at non-profits. That is definitely a combination of communciation and economics.

If you have the ins at the nonprofit, why not start working for them NOW? You can pursue any thing you want while working, instead of limit your focus in a major for that organization.

Mnay colleges that offer Masters Degrees in Public Administration have tracks that specialize in working for nonprofits.

im in hs. i am just wondering if i could work in non profit with a degree in econ and strat comm
