So I’'m a rising senior and considering colleges/majors. I’m considering schools like UDel (instate) Villanova, and JHU as my reach. I’m not totally sure about where to go because I’m not set on a major. I really enjoy math in high school and my family is in medicine, so I initially wanted to pursue biomedical engineering. I thought that I could jump from that into med school, or decide to enter the workforce as an engineer after four years. However, I recently learned that bioengineers are the one type of engineers where it is really vital to get a graduate degree, which kind of makes my entire plan worthless.
So the question is, is there another major I could have in college that would allow me to have some versatility down the road, as far as continuing on, or making it into my final successful career? I’ve heard biochem or chemical engineering but am not really sure… Thanks for any input!
You can major in anything and be pre med, being prepared for Med school is another question. Generally I suggest standard Biology with a minor in something easy and lucrative such as Business Administration. If you know a second language that is also a good add on to a resume.
You can major in anything and go work after four years. I know people with all kinds of liberal arts and science majors - including ones traditionally thought of as “worthless” like history, psychology, philosophy, and English - who have gone to work straight out of college.
If you want to go into engineering in health and medicine, a lot of people have recommended majoring in mechanical, chemical, or electrical engineering and taking coursework in biology and chemistry - many biomedical engineers actually are trained in mechE, chemE or EE and just work in health/biotech.
@juillet After seeing this thread that’s what I’ll most likely do at this point, thanks
