<p>I've worked in journalism related fields for 20 plus years. I couldn't disagree more that you do not need a journalism degree. Yes, there are some people who end up in journalism related fields without formal training - just as the same would be true for many other professions. It would also be true - that those who want to be hired for a journalism position out of college should attain a journalism related degree. Most entry related positions at television stations, newspapers, etc - require such a degree. If your DD or DS wants to be a journalist - I can't imagine why they wouldn't study that profession! There is much more to it than "writing well" - they will study law, ethics, technical aspects, etc. If they have an interest area - then pick up a minor or classes in that area. That will help later - but there aren't many entry level journalism positions that require such expertise. Usually that is developed later and throughout one's career.</p>
