Hello all, I’m currently a first year Bio Sci major here at UCI. I was wondering if I should minor in Biomedical Engineering, since I’m currently unsure of my ultimate career path. I want to try to become a doctor, but I’m not sure if I can be as active and engaged as everybody else around me, since I’m very quiet. I was thinking biomedical engineering could be a possible backup career for me, but I’m not sure if I should take on the challenge of a minor.
I would have a longer “feel” for what biology is like first. People say it gets harder as the years go by, and the chances of changing your major rises. I would add it possibly sometime your second-third year.
Talk to your faculty advisor to see if that’s even doable at your school. At many schools it is difficult for non engineers to get into the engineering courses.
Also, if you are looking for career backup, I’m not sure minoring in bio med eng will open too many doors. Lots of pre-med students that don’t go on to med school are inundating the market.
