Major question. Really important

When I applied to Penn State I applied into the smeal college of business. Recently I have heard that this school is harder to be accepted into than the other schools within Penn State. I was wondering if this is true or not, and if it is, is it possible to call the admissions office and ask them to change my applied major to undecided? Also if I do call and ask to change my major will that affect my application at all, as in will they look at me as indecisive because I changed my major before even entering the school?

smeal is the hardest way to get into psu, even more so than engineering. the business school has an acceptance rate of under 40%. as far as changing, I’m not positive if it’s possible. it’s def worth calling the admin office cuz it would really help your chances

I have also heard that Smeal is tougher to get into, although I’m not quite sure if that is the case. Changing to undecided would be risky, because if you go that route then you’ll have to get into Smeal by earning good grades your first 2 years in college (I think it’s a 3.2 thru first 2 years but I’m not 100% sure).

To give you some perspective, I was accepted into Smeal in late November, and my stats are as follows:

GPA: 3.93 (weighted)
SAT: 1230, 1880 best single-sitting score (not combined/superscore)
ACT: 28

I hope that helps you see where you’re at.

lilBendtner, is Smeal’s acceptance rate really under 40%? Where did you get that stat?

I feel like I have to change to get into PSU though. I don’t think i have a shot at getting into smeal.
Here are my Stats
GPA:3.2
SAT:1240/1830
Alumni with donations(my dad went to smeal if that makes a difference)
and i applied for the Summer session
great essay
and great recomendations

My GPA is low because it took a while to get used to high school and learn to try hard. Since my freshman year I have been able to increase my stats though, as of right now I am maintaining a 4.02 GPA. Since I have a better working habit I think that the only way of entering smeal will be through hard work in my first two years of college

lilbendtner according to this website [The Pennsylvania State University: Undergraduate Profile - BusinessWeek](<a href=“Bloomberg - Are you a robot?”>Bloomberg - Are you a robot?)

Your facts are wrong. In this website it stats that the smeal acceptance rate is 51%. If this website is true then the business program is not much harder to be accepted in to than the overall school which has an acceptance rate of 54%

I would wait to see if you are accepted or not, and if you are not accepted see if you call and say you will do summer session or change your major if they will accept you.

I’m a penn state freshman in smeal. I have a seminar class based on familiarizing yourself with business school. my instructor (who is a head part of smeal advising) let us know that freshman admission into the business school is under 40%. penn state student = more educated than google lol but yeah you must do DUS if you apply undecided and it’s actually hard to transfer into the b school from DUS

****, decisions decisions. I am probably going to end up staying applied to smeal. I know i want to do smeal and it would be quite a tragedy if i got into penn state and wasn’t able to maintain a high enough GPA to transfer into the school. If i don’t get accepted to the business school I will most likely do what kblitz said and call in to the school and see if they will reevaluate me for DUS

Did you apply specifically for Summer or for Fall with optional summer? Either way, you still have a shot at getting into Smeal for the summer session, as that one has a less competitive applicant pool than Fall.

I applied specifically for summer, but its too late now lol. I already called and switched to DUS. I really want to get in here so I’m doing everything in my power to do so. Also since im not gonna be in smeal already and it requires a minimum GPA average, this will require me to keep my GPA up and give me extra incentive to work hard.

@inhabit did you end up getting into main after changing to DUS?

Also does Penn state tell you that if you change your major to DUS you’lll get accepted or do you have to ask?

I think you should have waited! If you were rejected you could have called and asked if being rejected was due to GPA/Sat or was it due to Smeal being full. Then see if changing Majors would have helped.

THis thread is from 2011; I imagine the OP is long gone.
