Majoring in Architectural studies

I'm confused. I know that if I obtain a 4 year B.A. Architecture degree, I will be allowed to get my M.Arch in around 2 years at a lot of the grad schools that offer M.Arch. Does the whole 2 year thing apply to B.A. Architectural Studies or is it just B.A. and B.S. Arch? Because UCLA only offers B.A. Architectural studies and I was wondering if I should still apply there or not. Would majoring in B.A. Arch studies allow me to go the 4+2 path or is B.A. Arch studies just the same thing as me majoring in any major and going to grad school for 4 years to get my master's? Thanks. This will save me my application money if I don't need to apply to UCLA.

It really depends on the M.Arch program, and you need to check individually. At most, if you have a B.A. in architectural studies you would need 3 to 3.5 years in order to get your M.Arch.

With a B.Arch or B.S. in architecture the time required to earn an M.Arch varies widely. You need to check the fine print.

Note that a B.Arch is different from a B.A.Architecture.

I believe that most B.Arch programs are 5 years, but I’m sure someone will tell me otherwise. What I’m not clear on is if a BS Architecture always allows you to get an M.Arch in 2.0 years or if the 4.0 + 2.0 is school specific.

The options really are confusing.

This is just based on my own research trying to answer your same question, I begin my B.A. Architecture next fall:

Depending on the school as momrath said, yes you can.
I know Harvard has MArch I and MArch II, MArch I is a 3.5 year program for non-Arch B.A. or B.S., within MArch I they have an Advanced Placement program for B.A. Arch students. The MArch I AP program cuts out the first year of studies and the student begins in the 3rd Semester of the program (actually their first in the program).

Columbia has a MArch I and MArch II program as well following the same concept, as does Yale.

Most Graduate Arch schools offer two programs.

There are variations in how graduate schools apply their requirements, but in general you are looking at 5 years of design studios for a professional degree. So if the BA in architectural studies has an introduction to design your sophomore year, but only two years of real studio work, then you can expect to be placed in the three year MArch program. if you do three full years of undergraduate design studio, then you can generally do a two year MArch. BA vs. ** does not always tell you what kind of degree it is, it often just depends on whether the program is in the engineering college or the arts college.

having graduated from UCLA architectural studies program - it is only a 2 year program technically. At least that’s when I applied (2007). We were the FIRST FIRST group to attend their inaugural bachelor’s degree.

it may be still the same where you apply after your 2nd year, going into your 3rd to declare it. you would need to get an M.arch degree to get license if you do go with UCLA.

If I were you, I’d major something else unless you are into architecture.
