Majoring in Legal Studies?

<p>My school offers a major in Legal Studies, and I'm not sure whether or not to major in that or environmental studies. </p>

<p>It does seem like a cliche to major in legal studies, since you don't bring anything interesting or "fresh" to the law school admissions table as far as majors go. I feel that this might hurt my chances (or in the very least, not give me a major "boost"). Also, I have heard that depending on what you major in, you might gain an edge on a given specialty in law (ex: engineering = IP law, biology = medmal law, etc).</p>

<p>On the other hand, I am almost certain that I will get better grades majoring in legal studies than in environmental studies. Considering that my first two quarters of freshman year didn't go too well (cumulative GPA for both quarters is about 2.9), I think that I will need any grade advantage I can get.</p>

<p>I mean, you don't want to major in this. It's one of the things adcoms specifically say they don't like to see, and they will punish your GPA for it. On the other hand, sounds like your current major is doing a sufficient job punishing your GPA all on its own. Is there a third option?</p>

<p>well, my major was supposed to be a branch of biology, but... well, i failed chem... so thats not happening. </p>

<p>When you say that they will punish my GPA, is that for legal studies? Also, by "punish", do you mean downgrade?</p>

<p>Again, most adcoms specifically say they don't like this major. So it might not be an explicit downgrading to your GPA, but there's certainly some kind of penalty involved.</p>

<p>From what I've read, they really discourage taking too many legal studies classes. They want to teach you the law from a clean slate.</p>
