Hi, I am wondering what majors would be most likely to provide one with internships in Investment Banking or Investing during college, after college and ultimately after Grad. school. Obviously finance or business administration/mgmt. comes to mind but are there some other majors that are strong in the business world as well?

Besides economics and maybe accounting, not really any. Finance is the way to go if you want to do i-banking though...too many people are obsessed with this career.

Does the fact that many people are obsessed with i-banking mean it is more competitive to get a job or what?

yeah it's one of the hardest jobs to get

yes the i-banking industry is very competitive in terms of getting a job. Especially in the top i-banking firms such as Goldman Sachs and Citigroup etc. It's very cutthroat and the hours are miserable, but people who go into the field are type As and they can handle clock in 120+ hour weeks.

well, i dont think it's the major that's conducive to ibanking, but rather the school you go to. ibanks are probably going to take a harvard sociology major over a business major from a lower school. they're not really looking for the major. they're looking for raw talent. all ibanks do training anyway once you get in. so you're going to have to show them that you're someone with potential and can learn quickly. going to a top school is one step. majoring in business, econ, etc. is good, but if you don't want to, then pick a major that isn't creampuff but you can earn a solid GPA in too, because GPA matters a lot.

engineering is impressive provided you can actually earn a high GPA from it.

My brother was an art history major, and he was hired by Goldman Sachs, so there ya go haha.

In all honesty, a finance degree is good, but as far as business related degrees that would prepare you for Ibanking, accounting is your best bet.

The other thing about an accounting degree is that if you are, more likely than not, unable to obtain an Ibanking job...you can always go back get a few dozen more credit hours or an MBA, pass the CPA exam, and have a very flexible/challenging/lucritive career.
