Also happened to me^^
I was told the essay is very important by the director herself and was also told to re-apply because I have a great chance of being accepted into honors.

DSs essay was a cut and paste affair … next more effort and not amidst other hurried applications.

Oh well …

I saw that your daughter was choosing between Miami and GWU, I am also deciding between those two schools. Can you tell me what was the deciding factor for her?

Thanks!

@musicmad
Even though MU and GWU are about as different as night and day, D loved both schools for different reasons… and could see herself at either.
Her decision came down to two factors: cost and distance.
She will attend Miami at half the cost of GW. Her career plans include Grad School(PhD), perhaps even at GW, but given the cost differential and her desire for dad’s help for grad school, the choice was fairly clear.
It also didn’t hurt that Oxford is driving distance (4 hrs) to home… and, due to distance, she can take her vehicle even as a frosh.
I think, looking back, her heart was with Miami even before the search process started… but, that’s just my opinion.
Good luck with your decision. Those are two wonderful schools!

GunnerDad, I am also a Miami graduate and my son is there now. I thought it was interesting your daughter looked at TCU as well. How would you compare it to Miami? I was not able to make a recent trip to Fort Worth with my husband and daughter. As much as I would love for her to be a Redhawk, she really liked the Horned Frogs too. Congratulations to your daughter…as you know, she will have a wonderful four years. What I wouldn’t give for a bagel from Bagel & Deli…

@volleyva
Bagel & Deli… you had to go there… have thought about franchising that place for the past thirty years!
TCU is very similar to Miami in respect to the student demographics, the feel of the campus (not too small… not too big) and the academic offerings (good for business and pre-professional tracks).
The differences we focused on were the campus setting being more suburban to Miami’s rural and TCU’s obsession with their sports programs… which we liked.
Let’s face it, Big 12 athletics is on a whole different level than the MAC schools.
My daughter has family in the DFW metroplex as a source of moral support and she could easily get to and from TCU on direct flights with minimal difficulty, so distance wasn’t a huge factor.
A small factor was sorority recruitment being in the fall at TCU and the spring at Miami. She didn’t really want to start college off with the stress of rush.
My wife, who is a Sooner, really wanted her to choose TCU. It’s that football thing…
In the end, the draw of bucolic Oxford proved too much. For me, I’m just really happy that she’s happy.

Thanks GunnerDad. I know what you mean about just wanting them to be happy. Our daughter is applying to five or six schools and we would be happy with any of them for her. In the end, the choice is hers to make. I do agree that rush in August would be a little more stressful even though that is what I went through at Miami. It does seem a lot more serious now, especially at some of the southern schools she visited. I wonder if it was that way when we were there and we just didnt realize it? Enjoy your next four years of bagels. :)

You guys are killing me with the Bagel & Deli references!! Our oldest son graduated last May from Miami (double major Finance/Accounting). He had a great experience there! As parents, I have to admit we had a blast every time we visited Oxford…sad that chapter in our life has ended. Our triplets were all accepted there, but decided (for various reasons) to go elsewhere. Two are at Univ of Cincinnati, and the third is at Ohio U.

Happy Alum
After 25 years in the desert (having not returned to campus), my daughter has chosen to go to Miami…I could not be happier that I get four more years (if only occasional parent visits) of Bagel & Deli. Life has some wonderful unexpected surprises!

Hi, Son is at Miami in his freshman year now. He also declared no major but by Sept. wished he had chosen business. First year he couldn’t manage the high GPA needed to transfer in. His advisor suggested to him that it is very rare to do so. He is now choosing Econ Major in Arts and Sciences. Frankly, I worry that he feels like a second citizen compared to all of the other business majors he knows…as much as I worry that business is so strong at Miami that he may feel compelled to go into business as it is the most popular major. I remind myself we chose Miami for it’s strong academics overall…hoping he can’t go wrong. Haven’t posted in over a year…hope this helps. Good luck

That post was for Ely from Connecticut.

GAMomma, congratulations to your daughter and have a wonderful time in Oxford. You might want to consider reserving a room at the Marcum Conference Center for orientation in the summer and also for move in day. We too are from out of state and moved our son in a day early in August. Contact housing, they are very accommodating. We arrived late afternoon the day before move in day and dropped off most of his things. We stayed a few hours the next morning to make the required trips to Bed, Bath, and Beyond and Walmart before starting our drive home. :)

Thanks for the tips Volleyva. Especially the part about contacting housing for early move in. We have a long drive home as we are from Texas…

GAMomma. Housing has been so helpful but they do like to be contacted from the student’s email. Your daughter should receive hers soon. I think it is interesting you are from Texas and driving to Ohio. We are from VA and my daughter recently visited TCU and fell in love with it. Do you have any thoughts since you are from Texas? Would love to hear what another Miami alum thinks. It would have been too easy to have both children in Oxford! :)

TCU is a great school. The business program is highly respected. Football rules. There are several people we know who are at TCU and love it. I personally love Ft. Worth as I find it very friendly. You are centrally located in Texas which can be great. Greek Life is big so if your daughter wants to rush, then have your recommendations and letter of support asap after she makes her choice. I am a big believer in fit for school. If your daughter lights up when she gets to a campus then it is probably the right choice.

Thanks GAMomma. She does light up when she talks about it and she switched her car keys from a red Miami lanyard to a purple one from TCU. Sigh…
