I’m a female perspective student who has always thought that she would be more comfortable at a smaller school, however, i want to go to a big school for the diverse social scene!!! I also love Ann Arbor and UM as a whole. Im a little intimidated with Greek life and going into college not knowing anyone. What’s the most popular way a freshman makes friends at UM? Also, is Greek life at UM like the stereotypical sororities you see at Alabama or FSU?? I’m very social and outgoing and looking for the best way to get a tight knit group in college!!
there are greek houses on state street and thats usually where the parties are but if you are not in greek life, its totally fine. i think its like 20% greek life
There are lots of learning communities, interest clubs, and if you are studying the humanities, you might look at the residential college too. Every student finds a different path.
Greek life is very expensive. If you don’t have tons of mommy/daddy money that allows you to drop a couple hundred dollars here and there without worrying about it too much for tickets and passes and things…it’s probably not the right fit. That said…there are a few Greek houses that are more focused on networking particular interests/career tracks. The Learning Communities are nice. There are a million student organizations to join. There’s always something going on in community centers, UMix, free events. You’ll meet people in your study groups, your classes, your housing situation, interest groups. If you’re outgoing, you’ll make friends in no time. Find people with similar interests and goals.
My D is asking about a UMich roommate thread for incoming freshman on this site. Does anyone know of one?
