Making your college list.

How do you guys create your college list? Since I can't afford to visit all the colleges I'm intersted in, I have no choice but to make my decision based off (1) the website information (academics, about the school, etc), (2) viewbooks they send me and (3) CC (since undergraduates post here).

You guys?

Same as you…i’m kinda winging it

Try to make visits to local or at least colleges with in a 1 to 2 hour drive and if theres one school that you really like from the internet and viewbooks, take a visit and if you decide you love it, apply early, whether ED, EA or Rolling.

Yeah I visted Fordham and I plan on visiting Columbia and Cornell when my internship is over. I also visited Gettsyburg through school earlier this year and I HATED it lol. Visiting is deff. a tipping factor

Bumpppp. Any thing else I should considering when making my college list?

1) Have that talk with your folks about what they can afford up front and how much money you need to contribute up front
2) Visit a large public university, a mid-sized private and a small LAC in your area so you know what the differences are between these types of schools
3) Identify your criteria for a school: size, weather, geographic location, urban vs. rural vs. suburban, possible majors (engineering is only available at some schools, for example), culture, co-ed or not, hobbies that are unusual but you can’t live without (downhill skiing, etc)…and read the college guides to find those that fit. Develop a list of 20 or so.
4) Check Naviance at your school to see where kids with the same grades and test scores were able to get admission.
5) Look at the Common Data Set for each school so you know who gets admitted-is it a safety, match or reach?
6) Find a safety or two-schools that you are absolutely sure you can be admitted to, can afford and will be happy attending
7) Figure out if you have a hook of any sort-something that will make you attractive to schools that might otherwise be a bit out of your league based on the numbers (SAT, GPA) alone (are you a recuited athlete, a URM, legacy, a national champion at something?)
8) Get your list down to a manageable size and you are ready

Yeah I’m winging it as well. Was able to visit the local schools but everything else is all over the country. I’m not flying to Chicago, California, Pittsburgh, Canada, etc. just for one visit each so I really have no choice.
