Mandatory Meal Plan -- anyone with allergies/gastroenteritis excused?

Hi.

I have a lot of digestive issues. Milk, eggs, gluten (bread), nuts, and a few more. Then, I went to an MD, a gastroenterologist who has restricted me from some foods that are irritating to a sensitive system, including bananas, believe it or not.

I called the Housing office this morning, explained my situation, and they seemed to think they could accommodate my requirements.

Does anyone reading this, or know of someone, who has severe dietary restrictions, and whether Cal Poly accommodates them? Or, has anyone gotten a waiver from the Meal plan requirement by showing medical records?

My concern is whether they will be able to have things like rice milk, gluten free bread, etc. in most of the restaurants on campus. It seems to me it would be a lot easier for me to manage my diet by just shopping at Albertsons and stocking the types of food I can eat, and by going to restaurants in town that would be able to accommodate me.

Thanks.

The meal plan is a huge rip off. They say it “helps you adjust to college life” or whatever, but in reality it just makes you fat (personal experience). I guess it’s kind of necessary if you live in the dorms, since it would be difficult to cook for yourself, but if you live in cerro vista, it’s just a waste. That’s just my opinion.

Freshman year one of my roommates hated the meal plan and would basically just use it to buy over priced bananas and bottled water. She said she wanted to get a note excusing her from having a meal plan from her doctor, but idk if she ever did (as far as I know she didn’t). You have a good excuse though, so definitely try to get out of it if you can. Campus dining offers a few options they may work for you, but it’s probably very, very limited, since most of their food is nasty canned stuff.
