Our family is in the midst of having to make a difficult decision. My son has had an excellent high school experience earning a 95 average, 8 AP, 34 ACT. He doesn’t know what he would like to study and would prefer a school near a city.
He was accepted to:
NYU
U Mich
Georgia Tech
Emory
Northeastern - $20k a year scholarship
Boston College
Boston University - Honors College & President’s Scholarship - $20k a year
There is a financial need on the FAFSA, my EFC is $39k.
I want him to choose the best school “statistically”, not necessarily “where he sees himself”.
Any thoughts?
Did you get your financial packages yet? I suppose the net cost is more important figure than the scholarships )congrats to him though.)
I personally think the kid should have the most say after cost restrictions are discussed. They may do best where they see themselves, they make thrive in the environment that suits them more. No one has yet perfected how to predict outcomes. I have never thought of my kid as a statistical average of a colleges output, lol. It can often depend more on major than on the college. Although art history majors at Yale can do well in investment banking.
Can you indicate the price, calculated thus: (tuition, fees, room, board ) - (scholarships, grants) = $…
for each university?
Next to each university, indicate how much you’d have to take in loans (federal + anything else if relevant)
Those are CSS schools, so your FAFSA EFC is largely irrelevant since you’re beyond Pell.
Are you saying that the other schools are full freight? (the ones w/o mentioned awards).

??
What does that mean? They’re all good schools. What’s wrong with having him choose where he sees himself??
That said…what is your budget for paying each year? If the full pay schools are unaffordable, then they should be off the table.
Another vote for considering fit. I think BU/NEU are your best bets. NYU is not worth the money, and the rest aren’t really city schools. They have their differences and I think picking based on fit would be the best choice between the two.
Personally I am biased to NEU based on co-op. It’s a great way to try out different jobs and find what you want to work in / study.
Is he more inclined to humanities / social sciences or physical sciences / engineering? If the former, I would possibly consider U Michigan and Emory as well if they are affordable, and NYU if it is as well. That would be over BU/NEU.
Basically, the only clear eliminations appear to be GT and BC. Other than that, it depends on a lot of factors…
