Yes! It was really nice to get the money right away instead of wondering what the admission really means for another week or more like we are for most of the other schools. Phew!
Congrats to those admitted to Frost! Though S didn’t apply there, it seemed to be a very nice place to spend 4 years! Very nice that the awards were posted promptly.
Since I asked the question. Indiana / Jacobs has started to send out merit award / scholarship letters.
anyone apply to Eastman? Anyone know when decisions are sent out? They said between March 15 - April 15. April 15 seems late.
Anyone on the yale school of music waitlist 2017 or 2016or 2015? When did you get the result?
My s is applying to grad programs, and it is all over the place. 3 schools he has been accepted but they haven’t given the financial packet yet,several others have given him the whole deal, including merit and stipends, one school rejected him several weeks ago, one last one (not surprisingly) still has not sent his acceptance or rejection, probably will let him know at the end of the money, tell him he has until april 15th, and won’t have the financial done until the week before (said school has the reputation of having the sloth from the DMV in the movie “Zootopia” working there.
With grad school, they seem to want a response by April 14th but some of them seem like they won’t let him know with everything until the end of March,so he will have less time than UG to decide.
@onedge:
I can’t tell you for sure, but I suspect you will hear by the end of March. From what I have been told schools process grad school first, and from what I hear Eastman has pretty much finished the grad admissions as of last week. Hopefully you will hear sooner rather than later, so there is time to decide.
^^I love your typo “at the end of the money”
^must be a freudian slip for my current bank account! lol
My daughter applied to one school for a specialized MM degree (a second MM for her.) She won’t hear anything until March 30, I think. She will only go if she gets a tuition waiver, which may not be likely because this particular program is not funded. Right now she is living as a freelancer so she does not want to take on any debt.
Thursday update - after obsessively checking the portal for that top school to make 100% sure the acceptance and merit award still show up (LOL) and then being added to an accepted students Facebook group and getting an email from the prof talking about some of the exciting things upcoming for the next school year it is finally sinking in for S. I think it has just taken a week for S to process that his dream school has become a reality if he wants it. He is starting to get very excited about this program, and I think there is a very good chance that is where he will end up.
S received one more merit award today, but not one that would change the status quo in any way.
@classicalsaxmom Congrats. That is great news.
Eastman has traditionally been late. We used to chalk it up to one particular person there but that’s not the case any more and they really improved their timing for a year or two yet this year it looks like they are back to getting close to the wire.
Undergrad parents, get used to this: it does not get any easier although you might be a little further removed from the process in four years. If you’re the nervous type, take out a Costco membership and stock up on Tums or Rolaids (and they have excellent prices on wine- if your state allows!).
I know this is a bit off topic, but also relevant to March Madness. I want to say how much I appreciate everyone’s helpfulness and attitude. After looking at some RD strings for some top universities, the vitriol floored me - some posters (mainly parents) went straight for the jugular attacking students accepted and the universities for playing a yield game, etc while expressing outrage at their (children, more aptly) denials. The threads quickly became toxic. On the music forum, while there are vigorous debates, posts are supportive. I hope that will continue.
@beaglemom I agree–it’s a haven of civility here!
So here’s a question - what are your kids doing musically right now? After all the audition prep are they doing anything fun, or are they jumping into the next big thing?
S is learning a piece he heard at the Peabody bass studio performance the night before his audition. Alice in Wonderland Suite for Double Bass by Alexander Muravyev. He came home and found it and was able to download the sheet music. It’s a different and fun piece of music, and you can really visualize the parts of the story through it.
He’s also working on a set of popular music for a little music festival in our town. He and his sister (who is a junior and a musical theatre gal) are going to perform together next month. If I make it through that without ugly crying, it will be a miracle.
He also has solo and ensemble coming up and I know he’s working on that, but I don’t know on what.
@BassTheatreMom - Great question. S is continuing with the same level of youth jazz orchestra, gigs, and events. He is still listening, transposing, writing, practicing, and all the normal things you would think he should be doing. He is being diligent in managing senioritis to still get A’s but with a more measured investment of time and energy. We all totally dropped the ball in arranging a summer camp due to the distraction and uncertainty of where he would be going to college, as that choice might affect summer activities in some vague way.
We have talked about how to use the summer in general. In a way, the summer would be most easy to put to use if he were attending UNT. That is because (1) he believes that auditioning for the lab bands could be a great motivator to reach the next levels of musicianship using the summer time and (2) there are general and jazz-specific courses that could be tested out of, that he could study for over the summer to create either a lighter load or a more elective-filled load once there.
Frustrating time, my S has some complete offers on the table, but he is waiting on acceptance and financials from one school and financials from others,one school he has everything but the studio assignment… meanwhile couple of the teachers are pressing him hard
to make a decision even though the process isn’t complete. It is frustrating that schools are all over the place with letting you know, and it also is a bit angering to me that the schools have an April 15th deadline for letting them know, but teachers seem not to know that sigh. In other words, things don’t change…
@musicprnt - on our Jazz front, there has been a surprising and helpful lack of pressing. Just one little tickle from one place reminding S that they are happy to have admitted him and are ready to answer any questions.
@musicprnt - I remember my D waiting on her UG school’s financial offer for their grad program. I believe it was released April 1. It was a Friday and at 6:00 pm she texted me to say…well guess what I got NOTHING. I never heard anything and all the announcements went out today. She even texted her teacher who was upset too. Two and a half hours later (8:30 pm), she got an email with 2 scholarships - neither of them were enough to knock your socks off - still she got something and felt better. And yes, two weeks later she had to decide.
The MM process was a lot easier on ME (the most important person in this process btw!). I didn’t worry that much nor did I assist that much. I thought she either gets an offer that informs her to continue or she graduates and gets a job. But I do remember the frustration and worry crept in in March as “we” waited for financial offers. The last two weeks of March and that first week of April was kind of intense…with me thinking…where’s the money folks…come on… And then the panic to find housing near a university in April for the next year (with having a girl, safety and proximity are always an issue).
Good luck…in the end I’m sure he’ll have excellent choices.
