I’ve done marching band all 4 years of high school and I was thinking about continuing in college. What is the UDMB like? Are the auditions just for deciding who plays what or do people actually get cut? Is it hard to do band and keep up with classes? Is the music a lot harder than high school music? Any and all info is helpful
My S, who will graduate next month, did marching band all 4 years at UD. He’s also in the Honors program. His time with UDMB has been of one of the best experiences he has had in college. The band is truly a special place where lasting friendships are made. From what I understand, the only “cuts” are in percussion/drum - though I could be wrong. Yes, collge level band is a serious step above HS, but you’re a decent musician, right? You’ll do fine. Band camp, the week before school, starts, will get you up to speed. Trust yourself and trust UDMB - you’ll have an unforgetable experience. Oh, and last time I looked, you get an academic credit in music for being in band (that means an “A” if you do your part) and there’s a modest monetary stipend. Good luck and do it. That Delaware Fight Song will be imprinted in your DNA!!
