Are there any freshmen that are considering auditioning for Marching Band? I really wanted to try-out, but I heard that it takes up a lot of your time and probably isn't good to do it your freshmen year. Are there any current UCLA students that can either confirm or deny that statement?

My son did marching band for 4 years, all the while completing an engineering major with a 3.8 gpa. Engineering is the most popular major in the band, so there are plenty of others who have figured out how to make time for it.

The band does a lot of fun things, they go on a trip to the Bay Area every year, and if UCLA goes to bowl games, they get to go to those as well. They also play at pep rallies, basketball games, etc. And they get primo seats at the Rose Bowl. Their parents get free home season tickets as well. :)

Don't be afraid to give it a try. The freshmen band members get to move into the dorms a week ahead for band camp. That makes it easy to make new friends right off the bat.

Where to get information regarding auditioning for Marching Band?

UCLA Bruin Marching Band

band does NOT take up a lot of your time, if you budget your time well. there are three 2-hour practices per week, and of course football games most saturdays. moving into the dorms early is a BIG plus (think claiming the best furniture in your room). band is a wonderful way to get to know people even before everyone's moved in. anyone who tells you it's a bad idea for freshmen is seriously misinformed!

other perks: free money for food during band camp (since the dorm dining halls aren't open for us), money given to us during band trips for food, all travel expenses are covered, and you basically don't have to pay for ANYTHING! :)

as for trying out, if you live far away you can send in a tape, so you don't have to actually travel here. and auditioning sooner rather than later is better, so don't wait!
