Marine Biology vs Fashion design

I’ve always had some doubts about whether I should major in marine biology or fashion design.
My parents always put the idea in my head that I should major in something related to the science field, and that’s it. But I guess I realized today that I could do what I want, and I shouldn’t use my decision on their opinion or beliefs. I’ve never really got the chance to express my love for fashion since I live with a conservative family, but I still love it, and I’ve always had a passion for it.

The only art-related class I took was during my current junior year, which is Art & Design, but we never really got to do anything related to fashion. Hopefully, next year well be able to have a design workshop class where I can build my portfolio, but it’s not guaranteed. Dubai Institute of Design and Innovation (a university in Dubai that collaborates with parsons and MIT) does give summer workshops and free online classes about fashion designing, though, should I sign up for those?

What can I do from now to get me ready to apply to a school for a fashion? The primary university that I’ve always wanted to go to for fashion is Parsons in NYC. Do I stand a chance tho? And am I making a huge mistake or not?

Somebody has to pay for your education. From your other posts, you have been counting on your government- but the institutions they will pay for you either don’t prefer or are unlikely to be accepted. In one thread a poster asked you to give the bottom 20 names of the 200 allowed to see if your stats would make them possible- that is your best bet for going to the US, whether for bio or fashion.

Because your only other option is talking your parents into paying for your education. It is not clear that they can spend US$250,000 - US$300,000 on your college education and as they have expressed a clear preference for a science- based education for you, selling them on spending that for a fashion degree looks to this parent like a long shot.

That is especially true if, as it seems from here, fashion design is more of fancy than a long term “passion” for you. Imagining outfits- even sketching them when you are bored is one thing- actual fashion design involves a lot of other elements. How strong is this “passion”, when there are free summer courses available to you and you are musing about whether that’s a good idea or not?! Have you put serious work into investigating what is involved in a fashion design course? Have you even read what the application requirements are for Parsons?

And: have you thought through how you would convince your “very conservative family” what you could do with a fashion design degree when you get home after college? b/c it is more likely that you would win the lottery and be struck by lightening on the same day than that you will be able to get a job and stay in the US after graduation.

To get into a top-200 school as an international student with a modest GPA is hard. To go to the US to study is hard. To be a young woman in a ‘conservative’ family from a conservative country is hard. To succeed, you will have to work harder.

I think that you should sign up for classes that allow you to try out your dream. See if it fits. It might! Then make a choice.

One thing you can try is the summer classes at FIT in NYC one summer.

FIT is a top school for fashion, located downtown NYC and places students in jobs in NYC often.

Even for OOS students it’s pretty cheap. Just an idea …

Yes I am counting on the government to pay, the thing is that the government has a list of universities for every type of major. Therefore, it differs depending if you choose biological sciences or arts. And I will be looking at summer courses to help me find out if this is what I really like or not. The reason I just thought of this and never did any online courses for fashion is because I didn’t realize until last night that this is an actual dream that I can make come true if I really do like, even if my parents do not agree. And by parents I mostly mean my Father.

Yes, I have put time into researching about the programs that Parsons have, I spent the whole night looking into it so I’m not very clueless as to what is.

@Dustyfeathers

Thank you very much, I will make sure to look into it. And again thank you.
