Wishing you and your fiance (or by now spouse) many years of happiness together. What a story for the grandkids!

Thank you people. BUT we got married and I called them to tell that only to hear that they filled my position with someone else and it is over :(. I am still recovering from the initial shock but don’t know if there is anything else to do. The recruiter told me he will call me if another position arises but oh well.

Congratulations.

Congratulations on the marriage and good luck in your job search! Having permission to work in the U.S. will certainly make finding one easier. Don’t lose heart…there are lots of jobs out there!

You got married earlier than expected, but planned to anyway… and now you will have an easier job search. I know this job was perfect for you but hopefully there’ll be another one. Things should be easier with your new status.
(It’s kind of sad for the US, though. When does that immigration reform get through, again?.. Canada has a much simpler system and is actively recruiting international students educated and trained in the US. In other words, “poaching” here because our laws haven’t moved on with the times. :s)

HI GUYS I NEED SOME SERIOUS ADVICE!

As I mentioned before I got married and fixed the sponsorship problem only to find out that they filled my position. Today I was on their website and I see two more openings for the same position. I am hoping they would call me back but what do you guys think? should I call them and ask if they will offer me the job? or should I wait until they call me? Please tell me I got so excited when I saw it online.

Call them and ask. It was definitely an impediment that you were not married to a US citizen. My SIL was nearly deported because her company did not do paperwork they promised to do for her So she and my brother jumped the gun and married earlier than they had planned… Cost the US government an arm and a leg too, because he was immediately sent off to a hardshop assignment (which was why he wanted to wait) and she got a generous spousal allowance. But, yes, she would have lost a job opportunity, and had a huge hassle had she been deported. Companies often do not want to go through the hassle of the paperwork that hiring an international i entails.

Yes call them Good luck!

Yes! Good luck!!!

One last question. Should I call the recruiter or email him? I am sorry if I am overthinking this but I’m very nervous that I will come off as desperate or as a pest. The last thing I want to do is burn bridges with the recruiter.

Call the number provided on the position’s description.

Hi guys, I just received another offer from a large company for a great position and this h1b fear is crawling back to me. As I mentioned before my bf and I tied the knot but I don’t have a green card in my hand yet. So should I ask them if I can work start working with my OPT until my green card arrives and then switch to it? Or would they think I’m bluffing to get the job.

please help, can’t have another job snatched right from my hands.

Tell them about your immediate situation, so that they know your green card is in process.

What has USCIS indicated about how long it will take until the two of you can have your interview(s) for the green card? I was under the impression that it was pretty quick.

Happymom that’s what I thought too that it would be very quick. But according to their estimates by the time I get my green card it will be April 2014!!

Luckily my OPT is still valid since my green card hasn’t been “processed” yet. So believe I can work with it right?

I don’t know if you can work with your OPT, but that is a good question to ask USCIS. Is your interview scheduled for April? That seems like a mightly long time! Back in the stone age I’m pretty sure that Happydad’s interview only took a couple of months to set up, and he walked out of there with a stamp in his passport that said he could work now and that the green card was in the mail.

If you don’t have any luck communicating directly with USCIS, have your darling spouse pick up the phone and speak with his congressperson or senator. Sometimes their staffers can get things done.

Fingers crossed here for you!

Thank you happymom, I feel like you genuinely care. I have one last question. I found out that I can work with my OPT until I get my EAD through green card. So when I tell this to the company do you think they will be upset over it or will they accept it and let me work with my OPT. I don’t want the whole scenario with the last company happening again where they retract my offer at the end.

BTW, this company doesn’t know I’m international all they know is that I don’t need h1b sponsorship in the future.

As long as you are straight with them about your situation, it is hard for me to imagine that they would be upset. Just let them know that you do understand that there might be a bit of extra paperwork because of your pending change of status, that you truly appreciate their human resources office going that extra mile for you, and that you intend to prove to be a strong asset to this organization.
