marshall: MATH 118 and 218 waived by AP scores; now what?

so apparently, if i have a 4/5 on AP Calc and AP Stats, i can get out of those 2 classes...so what classes replace them? do i get placed into higher-level math classes, or can i take some completely different classes?

I’m not in Marshall but I don’t believe you’re required to take any more math classes.

BUAD 310 business statistics

Oops, didn’t see that.

If you get a 4/5 on AP Calc (either AB or BC), you get out of MATH 118. If you get a 4/5 on AP Calc AND AP Stat, you get out of MATH 118 and 218. However, getting a 4/5 on ONLY AP Stat will get you out of nothing.

Generally, most people who pass out of 118 will take BUAD 304 first semester instead. Then they will do 218 2nd semester with everyone else. If you pass out of both, I believe the most common thing to do is to take 304 first semester and then BUAD 250A and BUAD 307 2nd semester.

But yeah, BUAD 310 is the math class that comes after 218, but I don’t know anyone who took it right away upon entering USC.

What would a typical schedule be if you place out of the econ requirements as well as the math requirements?

oh boy! both my math classes are waived by my AP tests as well.
i asked my friend who was in the same situation as me who’s a freshman now in Marshall, and he said exactly what akalboy said. sounds like that’s set!

Hm, actually I don’t know anyone who has passed out of both econ and math, but my guess would be that you do BUAD 304 and BUAD 307 first semester, then BUAD 250A and probably BUAD 310 (the upper division math class). However, if you have all of that done (econ and math), you may want to look into a minor or possibly double major, so if you do that, you may want to start doing classes for that.

haha thanks! i wont be passing out of econ, but im hoping to pass out of MATH 218 (assuming that i dont get the swine flu on the AP stats test day, or whatever). i already have a 5 in calc BC.

taking business classes in freshman year…i guess thats one of the perks of an SC education :)

“taking business classes in freshman year…i guess thats one of the perks of an SC education”

that’s one of the reasons i chose USC over Cal! WOOOOT =)

Yeah, that’s one of the great things about Marshall. You know that once you’ve been accepted, you in. So it’s not like Berkeley where you have to reapply later on Though I do believe it was the case years ago. But not anymore! You get many great and accomplished professors with first-hand experience right from the beginning!

Yep, yep, USC over Cal & UCLA here. S has a 5 in AP Calc AB, taking Stats this year w/ an easy A in the classroom. Won’t have the results back by orientation, although expecting 4 or 5. Suggestions on scheduling?

SoCalGal I don’t think you need to worry for 1st semester since your D will already be ok to take BUAD304 (passed out of Math 118). Since it appears that people generally take the Math 218 in second semester, she will know by then whether she’s exempt from that through her Stats AP score, and can proceed to another of those BUAD courses.

I’m in the same situation too! But I took AP CAL AND STATS in my junior year, wondering if i really can do these business classes since i dont really remember a lot of calc or stats… does anyone know if the business classes need a lot of math skills?? and i’m gonna be majoring in accounting, so i’m also wondering if i can take any accounting courses for my first semester? thanks~! any reply will be really appreciated!!

Well regardless of if you’re Business Administration or Accounting, you would most likely take BUAD 304 first semester. Then your other classes will normally be GE 6 (Social Issues), Writ 140, and then Micro/Macro Econ. Then it’s during your 2nd semester where you will do BUAD 250a and BUAD 307 (Accounting and Marketing). You could do accounting first semester I suppose, but most people usually do BUAD 304 first.

And I believe the only class after MATH 118 and 218 that requires actual those classes is BUAD 310. However, you will need basic math skills for the accounting courses and possibly for your concentrations. A few other classes may require you to know VERY basic concepts (ie can you read a graph), but nothing that requires extensive expertise in Calc and/or Stat.

So, would you advise to place out of calc and stat if you can - because you don’t really need those skills to do well in the subsequent math courses?

From what I’ve heard, you don’t have a choice. If you pass out through AP exams, you’re not allowed to take Math 118 and 218. That’s what they told me during orientation anyways since I wanted to take Math 118 since I knew I could bump up my GPA easily that way, lol.
