My question is, I know the mascot is Lord Jeff, but is there a picture of this mascot? Lord Jeff? I mean, I’ve seen a picture of the actual Lord Jeff, but is there a simple graphic image on school spirit type stuff? We don’t have our equivalent of the Williams purple cow?

You know, I was discussing this, specifically, in the car with my mom today. I'm all for animal mascots.

We don't have an equivalent of the Williams purple cow. If there is an image on school spirit stuff, it's usually the Amherst seal or sometimes a large purple 'A'. I happen to think our seal is pretty awesome, so I am a fan. Plus, animal mascots are so overused.

I like the seal, too, I was just wondering if there was some character-type mascot the school used. I guess the answer is just NO. :D

On ESPN Gameday, a college football pre game show held at the site of one of that weekend's big games, one of the announcers picks the winner of that game by putting on the head of the mascot of the team he picks.

ESPN Gameday covered the Amherst Williams game this year and when Lee Corso made his pick he had a purple cow head and a Lord Jeff head (sort of a big paper mache George Washington looking head). Sadly, but accurately, he picked the purple cow.

Is the "Lord Jeff" head not part of the official mascot costume?

There's a painting in the Williams College pub/bar "The Log" of Ephraim Williams, The Wesleyan Cardinal and Lord Jeffrey Amherst. Lord Jeff looks sort of like George Washington in this version too.

It's certainly true that some animal mascots are overused. However, many prominent LACs have managed to find truly distinctive animal mascots, so that "overuse" is not really an issue, e.g.:

Bowdoin Polar Bear
Williams Purple Cow
Colby White Mule
Connecticut College Camel
Trinity Bantam
Haverford Black Squirrel
Pomona Sagehen

Several years ago, there was an initiative at Amherst to adopt a new mascot. But apparently nothing came of it.

As noted in the article, Amherst's mascot was historically the goddess Sabrina.

Here is a link to a bad picture, but it shows the whole costume...

Here's a link to a better picture of Lord Jeff's head...

This link shows what the "Old English" A looked like before they switched to the "Block" A. I wish they'd change it back!

Except for Trinity's. Trinity helmets are gold, and feature a cartoon rooster with an attitude problem.

The Midd helmet design is cool, but the downside is that it's not very distinctive. Several other schools -- the best-known are Michigan and Princeton -- use the exact same "Winged Football Helmet" design, just with different colors.

Midd's mascot (the "Panther") also suffers from overuse.
