Master in CS? with awesome work experience but bad UG GPA?

Hi guys!

Say you did your undergrad at MIT. Say you did very okay, with an overall average of ALMOST a B. No, there was no improvement. The GPA was ALMOST a B every single semester.

Say you get hired by Microsoft/Google/Facebook right off the bat, then work for 2 years.

After 2 years, would it be reasonable to say that this person can get accepted to MIT Masters in CS?

P.S- It's a real close friend of mine, he did get "mediocre" GPA, but he did get hired at a huge company. He wants to come back for his masters. Is it reasonable with only 2 years, or should he wait longer?

The longer you wait, the less your GPA matters. By “almost a B”, I’m taking this as meaning just below a 3.0? Most grad programs have a GPA floor of 3.0 to even be considered, and even then the lowest accepted applicants are much higher.

With an MIT background and employment at msft/google/fb, that is a significant boost. However, I’m still unsure that will put the adcoms minds at ease when they see a sub-3.0 gpa and have to evaluate if this person can handle the graduate coursework.

Strong letters of rec, which hopefully portray the student as academically capable, will likely be a big factor here.
