I want to be a special education teacher, and Emmanuel College (MA) has a 4+1 education program, in which I can get a BA in Elementary Education and an MEd with an endorsement in Teaching Students with Moderate Learning Disabilities. Would this prepare to become a special education teacher? Would I be better off getting a BA in Special Education then going on to get an MEd in special education?
Usually a BA special ed followed by an MEd special ed is for a teacher who wants more advamced work in some aspect of spcial ed. Do you have any particular interest at this point, or are you interested in general special ed?
@happymomof1 I don’t have a particular interest - just general special ed. Also, general education doesn’t interest me much.
Licensing requirements and job opportunities for teachers vary widely around the country. In some places a special ed teacher who works in an elementary school would be expected to have an el ed certificate with a special ed endorsement. In other places an initial certificate in special ed would be desired. This means that you need to do a bit of research about hiring practices and licensing requirements in the job market where you hope to begin your career.
If you re-post your question with a title along the lines of “BA special ed or BA el ed plus MSEd special ed for job in State-Name-Here” in the Parents Forum, the parents who are teachers are likely to spot it and can give you some feedback.
Wishing you all the best!
