Master Plan

So I’ve been a looking at Boston College a little bit, and I really like it. In looking, I’ve noticed that they have an 10-Year Institutional Master Plan for the development of their campus (http://www.bc.edu/content/dam/files/top/alumni/connections/connx0108/masterplan_map.pdf). This seems really cool, but honestly, pretty ambitious for 10 years. What are the odds that either a University Center or new Recreational Complex are actually built within the next 5 years?

It’s doable, but the BIG unknown is the City of Boston which needs to issue the permits, and anyone who has lived in big cities know what that can entail.

I agree that the IMP is very ambitious, but as you can see, BC is well underway in making its plans a reality. And these are just the construction elements of the Plan, which also calls for additional student aid, programs, and much more.

Under the 10-year Institutional Master Plan (IMP), $700 million is for new construction and $100 million is for renovation:

COMPLETED AND/OR UNDERWAY:
2014: Updates completed on O’Neill Plaza and Gasson Quad.
2015: Renovations completed at Maloney Hall. Will now accommodate the School of Nursing
2014: Renovations completed at St. Marys accommodating the communication and computer science departments, Woods College of Advancing Studies, and a Jesuit residency.
2014: Construction completed at Stokes Hall accommodating the classical studies, English, history, philosophy, and theology departments, etc.
2014: Renovations completed for Gasson Hall accommodating classrooms etc.
2015: In 2007 BC bought 18 acres from the Boston Archdiocese. Renovations and additions completed at the former Cardinal’s residence on Brighton and now houses the McMullen Museum and Conference Center, with plans to develop an Art District.
2014 - 2016: 2150 Commonwealth Avenue. Construction underway for undergraduate apartments with the demolition of More Hall .
TO BE STARTED:
2000 Commonwealth Avenue: In 2008, BC obtained a 287,920 square foot 17-story apartment building, which is slated to be renovated into student housing for 540 students in approx. 182 apartments of 1 and 2 bedrooms.
As per the Boston College Chronicle:

Build a student recreation complex on St. Thomas More Drive on Lower
Build a university center on Lower for student organizations
Expand and upgrade Robsham Theater.
Develop the Brighton Athletics Center with baseball and additional sports fields
Expand parking at the Beacon Street Garage and on Brighton campus
Renovate and create a Conference Center on Brighton as well as moving the Theology School

Further to your question of " What are the odds that either a University Center or new Recreational Complex are actually built within the next 5 years?"
In terms of priority, feedback is crucial. When Stokes was being built, students were really upset about losing the Dustbowl (large area of open space). As a result, O’Neill Plaza was ripped apart and completely redone. The cement was removed and green grass was planted. This renovation wasn’t planned, it came about in response to students’ needs. Likewise, should there be a clamor for a new recreational or university center, it’s brought to the forefront in terms of what’s next. Especially when the Alumni get involved. …
