I really need help in trying to pick which colleges to apply to for a masters in animation (MFA) either in the US or in Canada.

first off some basic details: I hold a Bachelors degree in engineering. And a diploma in animation both 3d as well as 2d. so i have the basic skills which are required to animate in place.

The kind of course im looking for:
1) a two year MFA program in animation
2) Located anywhere in the US or in Canada
2) scholarships . If available. either that or schools where the tuition is not that expensive.
3) colleges which do not mind taking in students from other disciplines.(important as my bachelor's degree is in electronics)
4) I know that the top colleges are RISD, SVA, Calarts, VFS. Any other schools which offer good MFA programs?
5) if not the top "

Would a Masters actually help you? Do you have any real-world experience yet? Are you anywhere close to paying off your loans for your other degrees?

When it comes to art/film the best thing you can do is practice and get experience- not just get more and more degrees for the sake of doing so. Experience is most important. You can learn from internships just as much- sometimes more- than you can in class.

You say anywhere, you really have no preference on location? You might seriously consider cost of living, especially if you’re reliant on scholarships. Cost on rent and living expenses while going to OSU for example, (who does have a great MFA program) is going to be a huge difference than say NYC or LA.

Academy of Art is fairly hit or miss depending on who you talk to. I’ve heard a lot of negative things about them, but I always take opinions with a grain of salt.

October does have some good points. It’s generally a given that mainly, the only thing an MFA gives you is the ability to teach, and thats not even a requirement everywhere. If you’re not planning on teaching, and looking to move into the field as a career, you might be better off getting a second bachelors, specifically a BFA in animation, or time based media. I’d assume you wouldnt have to take a full four years, and the knowledge you’ll pick up there will do far more to progress you in experience than a 2 year free form masters program.

When you say diploma’s in animation, what programs provided you with those?

I did not know that a BFA in animation is a better degree to have than a MFA. that was an eye opener.

The thing is I am an international student. Hence the little disregard for location. My aim was more to, get into/ find out ,which are the good colleges and to try for a scholarship than to discriminate on the basis of cost of living.

Does anyone know any colleges in Canada which have a good animation program (either BFA or MFA) ?

There are a number of good 2 year mfa programs in animation. Check out Pratt, and RIT in NY. I think SVA also is a two year program. I believe SCAD has a two year program too. In Canada, check out Sheridan Institute.
