I’m considering enrolling in UCLA’s online Masters in Science Engineering (MSE) program with emphasis in Computer Networking.
I’ve an undergrad in Electrical and have been looking for an online Masters for a while. I also have an option of pursuing MS in Computer Science from USC.
Can someone please provide some feedback on MSE Computer Networking program offered by UCLA? The program is completely online, degree is accredited, course is condensed to 2 years+1 quarter.
Will appreciate prompt feedback. I’ve already obtained approvals from my company who has agreed to pay for the program. I’m in the final stages of making a decision. Please help.
Anyone??
I’ve done some basic research on the MSE Computer Networking program offered by UCLA -:
Degree is accredited, though they grant Masters of Science in Engineering as against Masters of Science in Computer Science. Is that a big deal?
Courses seem okay. Program director assured me that they are the same courses as offered in the full time Masters program at UCLA
I’m however unable to assess the quality of the online delivery mechanisms, and if this program has really helped anyone in their career.
If anyone on this forum has taken the online Masters program from UCLA in last few years, please share your experience.
The classes are the same as the on-campus classes. You do the same homework, and take the same exam. And you still have to do a capstone project at the end just like all other engineering master students on campus. (You can do a thesis if you want, but almost no one chooses that option).
And they have weekly live discussion session done over internet (elluminate, go google it if you don’t know what it is). You get to talk to and listen to TA or professor or other participating students going over the material live during that session (most likely during evening as most students have work during the day). You can show yourself to professor/TA if you have webcam. And professor/TA can show themselves to you (They have webcam).
The degree is the same, just the major is “Engineering” rather than something specific because this program allows great flexibility in course selection (you can basically take any engineering course you want as long as director approves your course list). They also will give you a certificate stating the Area of Study (in your case, you’ll get a certificate for Computer Networking).
If your company is willing to pay for the tution, which is not cheap ($30000 for the whole program), then it is clear that your company views this being very useful for your company and your industry. Unless your ultimate goal is PhD, I don’t see the major “Engineering” being a big deal.
Hi, I am also considering this program. I have BS in chemical engineering but want to get a MS in electrical engineering. I also had the question about the degree title as MS in Engineering rather than MS in Electrical Engineering even though all the courses I will be taking are EE courses. Does anyone know if that matters as much or not? Thanks.
The course material is the same, but the title designation is different… so it all depends on personal preference… for me, it’s not a big deal. For most employers, it’s probably not a big deal as well, unless you’re going into research-oriented career.
Hello,
Is anyone taking up the UCLA online data science program or the hybrid program? I really need some reviews on the same please share the same. If everything is the same as the on campus program, how are group project related tasks handled??
How do you think employers view an online degree from UCLA? Any experience with that ?
