Hello! I need some help. I am trying to pursue a Master's degree in Social Work so that I can eventually become a counselor and have a wide range of career opportunities. My bachelor's degree is in psychology and I would really like a program with a strong psychology focus. Eventually I might go back to school for a PsyD (when I can afford it). There are so many MSW programs so does anyone have some insight? Many have a concentration in Clinical Social Work (or Mental Health, or Micro Social Work) and I need some help!

Social work is not my field, so take my advice with a grain of salt.

Generally speaking, social workers don’t make a lot of money (they average $42,000 a year) and it’s not a prestige-driven field. Social workers can generally get work with a degree from any school which is accredited and licensed to produce clinical social workers.

So my advice is not to choose a pricy private for your MSW, but choose a public university that won’t cost you a whole lot of money but will still get you to your goal. You can either choose one in your home state, or go move somewhere else with a great MSW program and work in that state for 2 years to establish residency.

What you want is an MSW program with a focus on clinical social work. Many MSW programs have more than one focus, so you just need to visit the webpages of SSWs that are attractive and look up their foci.
