Match and Reach Schools (help)

I am a rising senior and I’m looking for feedback concerning possible match and reach schools. Anyway, I'm open to both larger state universities and smaller liberal arts. I've visited both types, and I think I'd like to apply to a good mix of both. At first I was weary about small schools because I am coming from one, but after my visits, I realized my fondness for the intimate creative atmosphere- and I know that can be found at larger places as well. I'd also like to add that my essays and recommendations will probably be a huge asset. My GPA has suffered a little bit because of personal issues, but there is a trend of improvement. Realistically, I know the GPA will serve as a hindrance in the application process.

Next, I guess I should provide some information about myself. I go to a private school in Ohio; it is a pretty rigorous school, but not impossible to handle. The workload can get heavy though, and teachers put a lot of emphasis on writing ability- so a lot of papers and portfolios. There are roughly 40-45 people per grade. AP classes are weighted, but honors haven’t been; although I believe that’s in the process of changing. The school does very well in preventing grade inflation. The most recent graduating class had an average GPA of 3.1.

My GPA is a 3.2. I scored a 29 on the ACT. The first time I took the SAT, I got an 1890; my second time I got a 1940 (I will probably retake it this fall). Both times, however, I was in the 97th percentile in writing.

My honors/advanced courses include Honors Biology, AP English Language, AP Literature, and AP Statistics.

My activities include being a member of my school’s Gay- Straight Alliance since freshman year (I will be a club leader this year); I’ve played varsity tennis my freshman and junior years, and will be a co-captain next year; and I just got accepted as a member on my city government’s youth commission for the 2013-2014 year. In July 2012, I attended the Debate Institute at U of M (they use “institute” instead of “camp” because it sounds cooler, I assume), and this summer I am attending a program at UC- Berkeley on journalism and media arts (part of the National Student Leadership Conference).

Anyway, I’d appreciate some feedback. I’m trying not to get overwhelmed by this process and to take it in stride, but it is the next four years we’re talking about. So, it’s a little intimidating to say the least. Thanks.
