Matches And Safeties

i have no idea what schools to look into for matches and safeties..

SAT (first time, retaking it to bring up math and writing)
740cr
700 M
700 w

didnt take sat 2s yet

4.0gpa rank 3/204 .. school rarely sends kids to top universities

varsity lax, varsity field hockey (captian next year), student rep, NHS (pres), student council (1yr), community service club, art club, newspaper, random decorating comittees

intermural volleyball, basketball

job - 20-30 hrs/week -- manager at store

good communitee service

full merit scholarship to high school
most likely national merit

REACHES
-cornell
-gtown
-upenn
-jhu
-northwestern

HIGH MATCH
-colgate

MATCH
-gwu

i need more matches and safteies! looking to become lawyer/ major in polysci, gov, pos. social sciecnes

i want school on east, with good programs in these feilds, urban or rural does not matter, would like diverse, liberal campus, but it doesnt really matter..

SUGGESTIONS WOULD BE AWESOME!!

i forgot wesleyan as a possible reach..
haha i may need to cut down on the reaches?

American would be a good safety. Campus is nicer than gwu. I would consider more liberal arts colleges than just colgate and wesleyan. They are so good in polysci, prelaw. What about Rhodes as a safety? Or Elon? Middlebury would be a good match.

thanks! all definitley look into them..
i dont think i would like the country club feel of elon... thats what is turning me off about colgate..

anyone else?? pleaseeee

What about St. Marys (Maryland)? It is a public honors college and is not religious affiliated, but is named after the town. That may be a good safety. I'm not sure where Skidmore and Union fit in, but they may be worth a look also. Best of luck!

What state do you live in? The nice thing about state schools as safety schools is that if you end up attending, you're really just saving yourself a boatload of money.

What about Boston College as a high match. It matches in character to a lot of your reaches (upenn in particular)

i live in PA, will apply to penn state, but i dont really want to go there.
it's cheap though, which is a big plus!

i also looked at BC, wasn't a favorite, but i probably will apply there.

thanks for all your suggestions!
im definitey appyling to american as a safety and looking more into the achools you suggested

Have you looked into NYU as a match/high match? Fordham would be a good low match for you.

Penn may qualify as a reach. The rest of your reaches look like decent matches to me. 2140 SAT, straight As, and captain of a varsity team? That seems pretty solid to me.

Rejected at Penn. In everywhere else.

Why hasn't your school sent students to top universities? Is because of a lack of offering AP courses? GWU is the most expensive school in the country and (like NYU) is not really a campus but you're going to a city. Yes, substitute American. Also, try Union, Muhlenberg as safeties (the latter offers merit aid and your scores should qualify). IF you have AP courses then substitute Vassar for Wesleyan.

I would look at Davidson College in North Carolina. It has the inaccurate reputation of being southern and conservative but it is just the opposite. There is a very diverse student body in terms of political affiliation, view points.... It also has great weather, is located on Lake Norman, and has a gorgeous campus. You are also very athletic which makes Davidson a good choice. I believe 30% of the student body plays D1 sports and even more play club/ intramural (field hockey program is awesome!) Definitely something to look into!!

you seem to be underestimating yourself. I'd characterize most of your schools as a third of a level easier than you estimate (i.e. many reaches are closer to low reaches, GWU closer to low match, etc.). Your class rank is good, SAT's scores are pretty competitive, and your work experience as a manager seems like a strong asset.

If you're looking for safeties, I'd second American, and The Ohio State University also has a very good political science program.

I second American. They were very kind with me- Honors/Pres. Scholarship and I have stats similar to yours. From what I've seen and my results, they basically consider GPA and M/V SAT for this sort of stuff and I had a 3.92 (U/W) and 1480 and those were my results, so you would probably have luck too.

However, I'd switch Colgate and Northwestern in your lists... this is just my sense of things about how admissions worked at my school. I know a few people that got into Northwestern that aren't nearly as strong an applicant as you are, but we have pretty similar stats and I was waitlisted at Colgate... Maybe your sports involvement could give you a bit of a push into Colgate? Not sure.

thanks for all the help!

native NJ, my school does offer APs i am taking 3 this year and 4 next year.
its just a smallschool, most kids have no motivation and attend pennstate. only a few kids in the honors programs apply to top schools.
also, why would it be a good idea to switch vassar and wes? does vassar offer better AP credit?

i am definitley applying to american and looking into union and muhlenburg.
thanks for the advice about davidson too, im looking into that

Vassar & Wes are very similar. I said switch Vassar with Wes because in the past Vassar puts its highest emphasis on rank, then AP courses. Wes has put its highest emphasis on SAT, then AP courses - so I believe you'd have a higher chance of being admitted. But both schools are kissing cousins and who knows how admissions decisions will change.
