Math 126?

I am planning on studying Computer Science & Engineering at UW. I can imagine that this will be very math intensive. I got a 5 on the AP Calculus AB examination which excuses me from Math 124 and Math 125, allowing me to jump straight into 126. How hard will this course be for me, jumping from an AP Calculus class? Would it be wise for me to do even Math 124 or 125 again for a solid foundation? I feel strong in Math but my parents are only paying for my college if I get above a 3.9 cumulative, which is going to be toughhhhh.

Wow that’s very tough. I’ve heard from many people that skipping Math 126 is not recommended. In high school, I took regular calculus first in junior year and then IB calculus in senior year. I got a six on the IB exam, but I might still just go ahead and take Mat 126.

And plus, for a CS major, I would really work on building a very solid math foundation. It might be repetitive, but the more you do it, the easier it gets once you get to harder math classes.

What is a good review book for the Advanced Math Placement Test (MPT-A)? (OOSers must take it since they were not in Washington High Schools)

as a running start student i took calculus 1 & 2 at a community college (transfers directly to UW as math 124 and math 125), i compared the coursework to my friends taking AP calculus in high school, and we learned the same amount of information

my high school counted the two quarters i took at the college as one year’s worth of calculus in high school, so essentially, AP calculus counted as the same as calc 1 & 2 in college, only it was a year long rather than two quarters

if you feel comfortable with the material you learned in that class, then it would be pointless to take calc 1 & 2 at uw again

but i will say that regardless of what you take, it is EXTREMELY unrealistic to maintain a 3.9 cumalitve at a university, i don’t care how smart you are, most classes are curved, so you are in direct competition with student (eg, a certain percentage of the class has to fail, and anything over 3.0 is something to be very pleased with)

this isn’t high school or community college anymore! a lot of my A+ student friends have had to just be satisfied with not as high grades (like B’s, A-s, A’s)

(coming from a CC student maintaining a 3.97 gpa)

diogenes99, you shouldn’t have to purchase a study book just for the placement test. your acceptance to uw prooves that you have enough knowlege. the test was fairly easy. i passed. don’t worry.

I agree with the people here, and disagree at the same time.

Yes, passing the exams means you “have the knowledge” to go calc 126. However, “having the knowledge” and excelling are two different things. If you don’t want to mess up your gpa, I’d say do what you feel confident and absolutely positive you will be able to get an A in, calc 125. I got credit for 124, but I’m retaking anyways. Maybe its just me, but I have paranoia about screwing up my gpa.

I was in the same boat as you, but did just fine in 126. Really, look online and find the syllabus. It’ll be challenging, but in my opinion if you got a 5 you know what you’re doing. You’ll be fine, no point repaying for credits you already have. 125 is basically all integration. I’d keep 126 and after week 2 if it’s too hard for you you can always transfer to 125 (chances are there’ll be an opening by then).

Kurian, I am a CSE direct admit student and I’m going to restart at Math 124 instead of Math 126 this fall. I want to get a solid foundation, even with my 5 in AP Calc. So, perhaps I’ll see you in Calc I ;)

another Math 126 question…for textbooks they say that:

SOL MAN T/A MULTIVARIABLE CALCULUS (6E 0

and

SG T/A MULTIVARIABLE CALCULUS (6E 08)

are optional, but not required. what are they and are they worth getting?

the solution manual just gives hints I believe to certain problems, but answers for odds anyway are in the back anyway. I personally find it useless, as homework is such a small percentage of the grade and you have quiz section time I believe to go over some problems. Just not worth it in my opinion

wow, thanks for saving me some money! what about the other one, the “SG T/A” blah blah blah?

@theamazinggrace - I’m trying to figure out what that book is too, but I asked a friend who took Math 124 and Chem 142 last Autumn and he didn’t buy any of the optional books… and 4.0’d both of the classes. He says the optional books are usually a waste of time, and if you contact the TAs or profs when you have questions instead of blowing it off, you’ll do fine in the class.

alright, thanks for the advice!
