Hey guys, I'm a freshman MechE, and I need to take E7 and Physics 7B next semester, and I was wondering whether I should take 54 or 53 as a math class next semester (I'm in 1b this semester). From what I hear, 54 is very useful for E7 and makes it a lot easier. But at the same time, the schedule of classes website says that 53 is a prereq for Physics 7B. From what I hear though, 53 isn't really necessary for Physics in practice. Thanks in advance for the help.

P.S. Is this a decent schedule overall? I'm planning on taking these 3 courses and then a DeCal of some sort.

You can take both Math 53 and 54 simultaneously. So you can have those two courses, Physics 7B, and Engineering 7 for 16 units.

The E&M in Physics 7B does use some multivariable calculus as seen in Math 53.

Thanks for the advice, but I don’t think I can handle taking both 54 and 53 in the same semester. Also, do you think I could learn the multivariable stuff required for 7B on my own, or is it really in-depth and I would have to take it with 53?

If you’re taking E7, definitely take Math 54 concurrently. You’ll thank me later after you realize how much overlap of material there is for both classes.
