as you probably could tell from my oh-so-subtle (and mature) title, i don't like math. i'm a jr now and planning on being an english major in college. i'm absolutely in love with UChic (it's true love i tell you) but the "IT'S SO FREAKIN HARD HERE" comments of several CCers are starting to plant some seeds of doubt.

i was wondering if any of the uchic english majors out there can tell me about the rigor of the math classes. it's not that i'm a terrible math student (i'm taking calc as a junior and moving onto AP Calc BC nextyear) -- i just don't like math much. might i come to regret uchic b/c of its challenging math classes?

All classes at Chicago tend to be demanding, but one can take 2 quarters of calculus or another noncalculus and computer science course to meet the core math requirements. Calculus comes in 3 flavors, the 13100 series, the 15100, and the 16100 series. The 131, which I believe one can elect to take even if one places into 151, would not be too difficult for someone who has successfully completed Calc BC. Who knows you may even place out of calc altogether. Aim for the 5 on the BC AP test.

The Humanities classes are typically quite rigorous, but if that is you love, then that should be a plus. An aside: I spoke with S tonight who is taking a drawing class. He said, "Dad, believe it or not, they have even found away to make this class rigorous, of course, this is the University of Chicago."

If you take and do well in BC Calc, you should place out of math through the AP or the calculus placement test. Since it sounds like you're doing beginning calc material now and solely the BC material next year, you shouldn't have a problem with it. Otherwise, 131-132 is the easiest calc sequence, and it starts with pre-calc material. If you want to avoid calc, you could also take math 112, computer science, or stats.

The math sequence is as difficult as you make it. If you hate math, take 130's. It seems much easier to avoid sciences than humanities at Chicago.

I am a big, ****ing slacker, dude...It's not too bad, it just depends on what classes you take. Also, people here have the tendency to advance themselves if they think a class is too easy, they like to complain, they love the pain...it's an interesting, perhaps more pathological, form of masochism

Yeah, you can definitely double major here.

You need to swim four lengths of the pool (100 meters). There's no time limit, no stroke requirement, and lifeguards in case you start to drown. It's easy if you can swim. If you can't swim, you can opt out of the swim test and take a swim class.

The different math classes available for first-years ensure that you'll be able to take a class that's right for you... it goes from precalc to honor analysis, deemed the hardest undergraduate math class in the country... i wouldn't worry about math.
