Is this major a good route to break into finance?

Here is a [thread](http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/uc-transfers/1114003-my-ucla-transfer-experience.html?highlight=ucla+math+econ)started by Supa_Ramga, oddly enough, on the UC Transfer board relating to his originating post of having graduated from UCLA with a degree in Math/Econ. I don’t know if he’s still on these boards, probably too busy working, but maybe you can try and PM him.

Personally, I like the idea of studying math/econ because:

both math and econ are theory-based perusals. If you can study theory and latch onto it, you can study business-case and latch onto it extremely well, probably moreso. I guess what I’m saying is those who study bus-case are just like robots, who can only just spit out what they have learned.

studying theory will set you up for a quantitative position, rather than a straight sales position. You may not have the training initially specific to your job, but theory within this major is deeper than probably just about anything you’ll encounter on your job.

it will set you up well for any MBA program for the same reasons as the first listed (as poor a construct as my list here seems to be … but you get the point).

And wrt my third point, by stepping into an MBA program, your study there won’t be redundant in coursework because you will have studied the theory-based math/econ as an undergrad and gone onto, say, case in grad school.

Generally, if you study a wide-array of things from econ or bizecon, to chem or engineering, to math/econ or physics, to MIMG or MCDB, as jumbled as my list is, these will set you up nicely for a possible bus-sector, finance job.

So major isn’t as important as some would seem to make it. It’s up to you to get your foot in the door with internships, etc, especially if you were to major in, say, MIMG, because most people associate this major to those who want to attend med school, etc.

And what is mimg?

MIMG = Microbiology, Immunology, & Molecular Genetics
