I have been studying for the past two months, and have seen no improvement in my math score. I'm in the 610 range and I need it in the 780 range....

When I take practice tests, I go over the answers, and I use the barrons 2400 book. I feel like I'm doing it all. Any suggestions on raising my score? I seem to have the most trouble with geometry.

Most likely you’re probably getting most of the Level 4 and 5 problems wrong. So you probably want to focus on practicing problems of these levels, and possibly some easier geometry problems (but don’t neglect easier problems altogether). Furthermore, you need to make sure that you are applying SAT specific math strategies on these harder questions. This will keep you from getting tricked. After you are able to solve the question using the strategy, then do the problem again the way you might do it in school. This will help improve your mathematical maturity.

When you say “I go over the answers,” what do you mean? Are you simply reading over the solutions? This isn’t good enough to improve your score. After understanding the solution, you need to give yourself time to forget the problem, and then retry the problem without looking at the original solution. Keep doing this until you can get the problem right on your own.

I agree with everything that was said above me. I also recommend using Dr. Chung’s book because i have heard it is a GREAT resource for SAT math prep. It is totallly possible to improve your math score, i was at about 620 and i jumped to around a 770 average this year, and i’m a junior. All i would say is that when going over problems, make sure you 1. categorize all of the problems you have missed (looks like you’re already doing this, if geometry is your stated weakness) 2. go back over the concepts in the 2400 book, or Dr. Chung’s, and 3. make SURE you look for extra practice problems to make sure you’re solid with all of the concepts you’ve missed.
Step 3 is super important; even after getting a 620 on one test but breaking it down CORRECTLY, if you take all the necessary steps then you can easily raise you score to 700+. after that, it’s just understanding some of the tougher concepts that periodically come up on the SAT, which the 2400 book seems to do a good job of pointing out. Good luck!
