Math in College

What math course do freshmen in college, majoring in engineering or cs, usually start out with.? Calculus 1? Calc 2? Linear Math.?

Depends where you go and what you place out of. If you can place out, it will likely be Calc I and II, so start with Calc III or maybe linear algebra. Most colleges have specific requirements and such.

If a student starts in Calc 1, then he would he/she be behind.? I know many students even start at precalc.

I mean it all depends on where you are coming from/going to. For engineering though, it is better to get a firm grasp of calculus early, so your engineering courses can match up (esp for DE/PDE, matrices/vector calculus–for physics, fluid dynamics, thermodynamics, statics, electrical…) Students at say MIT and OSU could be in MV/LA or introduction Calc I.
