Math Major at Denison?

So - does anyone have any opinions of the math major at Denison? My son wants a small school but wants to major in Math and eventually pursue a PhD. Would Denison be a good school for him?

As I search for schools to put on the long list (he's a junior now), Denison just keeps popping up and seems like a great school - I just don't know how to assess the quality of math studies there.

I believe the math is good but, if he really want to pursue a PhD, he may be better off at some other schools. This summary of a study shows Reed is among the top Math PhD producers (per capita). [REED COLLEGE PHD PRODUCTIVITY](Doctoral Degree Productivity - Institutional Research - Reed College) Some other possibilities in the full study ([nsf.gov - SRS Baccalaureate Origins of S&E Doctorate Recipients - US National Science Foundation (NSF)](http://www.nsf.gov/statistics/infbrief/nsf08311/) ) include Grinnell, Kalamazoo, Earlham. DD2 is a math major, applied to Kenyon and Carleton, and is attending Lewis and Clark.

My D is a math minor at Denison. She is a chem major, needed to finish her calculus sequence, liked the professors and students in her classes so much that she has declared a minor in math. It’s worth asking the faculty where Denison grads have gone on in PhD studies in math.

And I’d add to the note on Reed …which may be redundant to your research …beyond the math studies, it is a rather dramatically different type of place than DU. Apples and oranges. Both are tasty but very different. Conversely, calculus is calculus, stats stats. Math more than most is not dependent upon professorial pedigrees to enable grad school.

My DD was a Math and French double major at Denison. She is now in Applied Math PhD program at Clemson and doing very well.
