Sorry to put this thread here but more people are probably looking at this thread, i kinda need some help…I an undecided person who cant make up my mind on my major, but is leaning towards mathematics…what kind of future can be evolved through math ? and do u think math is a good major ?

uuummm.........well two of my highschool math teachers who are fairly young, majored in math (one couldnt handle the science in engineering and i dont know about the other) and the one who couldnt handle engineering got accepted to ucla and ucb but chose to go to sjsu and he is in my opinion one of the best math teachers i have ever heard...haha, man my post got off topic fast, so in other words u can become a good math teacher...haha

math is really good if you want to do business stuff. one of my friends brothers majored in math then got his masters. he started his phd but he decided to get a job instead. he calculates risk assesment for a bank and is well compensated for his relativitally easy work.

is it common for math majors to get a job in business?

From my limited knowledge, ppl majoring math either becomes a teacher or goes to computer science side. My math teacher told me that lots of ppl who did CS cant understand some of the very complex programming stuff whereas mathematicians can.

CS and teacher... or stay at home and reasearch.. ;;

what else? I'm veery interested in math as well. but becuase of the future job issues, i'm considering double majoring in math/eco.

Math major is reletively dead end compared to the infinite possiblilites of Electrical, Mechanical, or CS engineering. I know several people who are double majoring in Mechanical and Math. They require many similar courses, thats what im planning on doing....might be a good route for you?

I started out as a Math major in college. When I realized that essentially you could teach or be a genious (didn't want to teach and not equipped to be a genious), I decided to do a double major. I randomly, and without much thought, selected computer science. That was in 1973, so was pretty much a fortuitous choice. I've had an interesting and varied career in the computer industry. I think there is a lot that you can do with a math degree, as it indicates you can think in a certain way. I definitely recommend doing a double major in math and something related -music, economics, and cs are some possibilities. Another career option with a math major is to become an actuary. good luck.
