Math placement

S completed AP Calc BC last year. This year he is studying Diff Eq/Lin Alg. We are in a situation now to decide what to do for him next semester. I am wondering how he will be placed into a math course. Would he be able to place out of Diff Eq/Lin Alg whether or not he completes the current course? Would he realistically probably not want to place out of it and instead use his knowledge in order to be more successful in class, also knowing that new material will be covered?

Thanks.

MIT students are able to take Advanced Standing Exams when they get here to place out of differential equations or linear algebra. If you take an ASE before first semester freshman year (when you arrive on campus for orientation) it is not included in your transcript if you do not pass it, and the grade is not recorded if you do. If you take it later, your grade is recorded but not factored into your GPA. MIT also gives credit for college courses, sometimes.

Whether or not to place out is a good question. It’s a good idea because your son will be able to take more challenging, more interesting courses instead. I chose not to place out of anything, because I wasn’t comfortable with the material at an MIT level after completing courses at another university.

For AP Calc BC, if you receive a 4 or 5, you are placed out of 18.01. For other courses, you can take the ASE as lidusha said, or consult a transfer credit examiner for the department.

Thanks both!
