So there's this big debate going on on Facebook about what the answer to a seemingly very simple math problem is. So of course I decide to ask the highly esteemed community of CC what you think the answer is, and to see if it you guys think it's even debatable. The problem is :

6÷2(1+2)=?

A. 1
B. 9

( This may seem surprisingly simple to you guys, but the question has 1,459,805 answers and about 60,000 comments of people debating 1 vs 9 so I had to see what you guys thought.)

Thanks (:

if 2+2=5, then 1+2 equals 4. Therefore, the answer is 12.

12 in bizarro world, 9 everywhere else.

If you ask me I’d definitely say 1 because that’s the answer the BEDMAS rule gives and that’s what I know. :)

It’s not debatable. The answer is 9.

= 6 ÷ 2(1+2)
= 6 ÷ 2 x (1+2)
= 6 ÷ 2 x 3
= 3 x 3
= 9

It is Step 3 that causes most problems - multiply and divide are interchangeable in order of operations and work from left to right.

@ HighOracle, Exactly. Some people don’t know about/understand order of occurrence . I chose 9 as well .

Oh yes I forgot that division comes before multiplication. So my answer is also 9.

It’s 9, but who uses the division bar past like 3rd grade? That’s probably what threw everyone off :P

The answer is 1.

From a math site:
"Note that different software will process this differently; even different models of Texas Instruments graphing calculators will process this differently…The general consensus among math people is that “multiplication by juxtaposition” (that is, multiplying by just putting things next to each other, rather than using the "

The answer is 9. Remember PEMDAS? Multiplication OR Division whichever comes first from left to right. Addition OR Subtraction whichever comes first from left to right.

I trust wolfram alpha with everything.

'Tis most certainly 9!

my vote is 9. this debate actually came up in our calculus class lol and our teacher said 9 too.
