MATH problem

This will seem really idiotic. But recently I found this official cc test online and I came across this math problem at the end of the section that i did resolve but there is no proof that i am correct(as the answer of this problem on the answer sheet was smudged due to a bad scanning skill). So can someone tell me if okay or not.

It says:
On the number line above, the tick marks are equally spaced. Which of the lettered points represent y?

so I thought that since it says x and then x+y then in between there are two ticks which means that one of the ticks is equal to y/2
this meant that x+y+(x+y)/2=2y (is this the way to put it? i am not sure)

therefore if you simple that out it gave me the answer that
y=3x
therefore if you substitute it in
the number line would be now
x (two ticks) 4x (two ticks) 2x
now I just thought since y is 3x then where could 3x be?
and the answer is (to me) C.

here is the link that i uploaded the test onto.

thanks to anyone who helps.

lala

I read this question before and I think its “E”

gregbob
you mean you ‘think’ or you know?

can you please tell me why you think its E?

thank you
lala

mmmm well I also got a hold of that test and the answer sheet had no answer for this question… so I also thought it was C at first but I decided to make up number and see how it would workout. know we know that x-y moves us up two tick marks… which means y has to equal either ±2… okay, while keeping that info in mind (x+y)/2 has to be 2 less than (x-y)…hmmmm now I tried to make up numbers that would satisfy our set of rules…

The numbers I came up with are X=-6 and y=2, but there is an infinite amount of numbers that would satisfy our rules, so you don’t necessarily have to have these numbers. anyway, now we know that the tick marked X=-6, the tick marked (x-y)=-4 and the tick marked (x-y)/2=-2… now keep in mind that y=2 then the tick mark with the value of 2 is “E”

mmmmmmhhhhhh
i see. but if we plug in numbers the answer is different every time.
it seems so cryptic

was the answer left out on purpose?

i don’t know if it was left out on purpose, but I also was thinking the same.

oh i am so confuzzled

im just curios but where did you find your version of this test?
i found mine from a downloading site
;D

I think its from the online course

gregbob did you do the rest of this test? if so, how did you solve section 9 question # 9.
i think its to do witth ratios buttt… all i get is 412

^yah I got it from a downloading site as well… for number 9 I did a ratio: 60/240=x/20
then x=80 then I add 326 which will give me 406.

Ok this is how I would solve it:

(x+y)/2 has the be the average of x and y, so x and y will be equally spaced apart from the this point. X is 4 away from it and Y will then also have to be that far away from it, making the answer E.

^I think linger’s method also works and is a lot more time efficient than mine is.

thanks guys

i get it now

so I guess my original workout was wrong. ah well
