Math Question on the blue book

<p>i looked in the consolidated thread of answers but this wasn't on it, surprisingly.</p>

<p>Number 18 on page 400</p>

<p>The shaded region in the figure above is bounded by the x-axis, the line x = 4 and the graph of y=f(x). If the point (a,b) lies in the shaded region, which of the following must be true?</p>

<p>it shows the graph, and asks which choice must be true, i understand why I. is true but i dont seem to understand III too much, despite it being wrong, thanks!</p>

<p>For any function y=f(x) - if a point (x,y)
is on the of graph, then y=f(x) (duh);
is above the graph, then y>f(x);
is below the graph, then y<f(x).</p>

<p>Say, for f(x)=x^2:
if x=2 then f(2)=4 and the point (2,4) is on the graph.
For the point (2,5): 5>f(2);
For the point (2,3): 3<f(2).</p>
