What kind of math is on the GRE?

High school SAT math, pretty much.

Now, I think the real question is: why do we have to pay ungodly sums of money to basically retake the SAT?

CB monopoly.

if you aced your Math SAT's, would you be in good shape?

It seems like it.

I mean, I just started studying the other day, so I've only taken one diagnostic test, but it seemed very similar to SAT math, even down to the quantitative comparisons (you remember: pick A if the quantity in column A is bigger, B if the quantity in column B is bigger... blah blah).

Even if you did well on the SATs, though, it seems like it would be worth it to study -- the GRE is computer-based, not paper-based, so you're not allowed to skip around on the test. You have to go straight through, from the first question to the last. It seems like it is a good idea to get familiar with this format.

What do they do if the computer freezes or something? I mean nothing can go wrong with a paper based test that I can see, so I wonder why they use computers, considering that they can have so many problems. Computers are evil when they do not work properly (are too slow, freeze up, etc.).

haha...yeah true, getting used to computeres will be weird

You know.. I think I would be more comfortable doing it on paper. Is that possible?

It's not because of computer related issues either. I don't know.. Paper just seems more tangible.. I can write wherever I want, flip through it, etc.

I know exactly what you mean. I like to go through the test book and mark it up, skip questions and go back... stuff like that.

According to the GRE website, "Paper-based General Test administrations are offered in areas where computer-based testing is not available." So if there's a computer-based testing center in your area, you may be out of luck. :-/

Oh, and bluealien01 -- I think they moved to computers because you're able to get your score immediately after taking the test, rather than having to wait a while like you would after a conventional paper-based test administration.

I looked at a chart once and it appears that paper based is only out of country. If I'm paying for this crap, I should be able to choose how to take it. This is a scam.........

Here is the list for paper-based:

Why is the SAT on paper then?

I have enough trouble finishing a test on paper as it is. I don't need to be inconvienced further by a machine!! I
