Math Strategies

I know people are always saying they can finish Math Sections in 10-15 minutes. But the question is how? I came to the realization there are some way shorter ways to do some of the problems, and I usually take the long way. So practice- though part of it- is not a good enough answer.

So what are some good math strategies that take less time? How do people finish 10 minutes earlier? (besides practice) A list would be helpful, please.

plugging in numbers/trying to use “test” numbers is often better than doing it the theoretical or trial/error approach

yeah that’s a good one.Thanks

“Plugging in numbers” is not a time saving strategy - more often than not this strategy takes more time than other methods. It is however a very important strategy - it often leads to a better understanding of the problem and can keep many students from getting tricked.

I found, having done loads of practice that the two most important strategies that I have learned are probably back solving (plugging in answer choices) and plugging in your own numbers for the algebraic expression questions. Often, a question takes too long to solve the ‘natural’ way taught in class, and I think moving away from that sort of mentality has improved my score immensely.

You should take care with the questions and watch out for the details.

I used to make mistakes simply because I jumped straight into solving the problems :|

yeah that’s true I realized looking over the question again before answering it helps. Is there any specific ways to cut time on the exam?

Because I know people are always saying they finish so quickly. But how??

I’ve thought about just making a thread about how to reach a high score in math because I consistently get 800. Anyway, some useful strategies are just plugging in numbers instead of taking the time to solve. If you plug in, always start with C because the choices are in increasing order so you will know if you need a smaller or larger number, saving time.

If you can’t plug in, draw visual representations or something instead of using equations. Like yesterday I did a problem and it took me longer than it should have because I used a system of equations to figure it out, when I could’ve done it in a few seconds if I drew a venn diagram and just figured it out that way.

Don’t try to get through the math section as fast as you can, that’s not the goal. Take your time and get all the questions right, that’s what matters.

^ I’d appreciate it if you wrote a detailed thread about how to get an 800 in math whenever you have time that is
