Math Textbooks

Alright, this is a question for those of you who have taken Math 1A and/or Math 1B at Cal. I'm heading to Berkeley this fall planning on majoring in Economics, and as I'm looking to eventually get through 53 and 54, I'll be taking the 1 series. I'm quite confident that I got a 4 or a 5 on the AB Calculus test even though I felt a little shaky with some of the more advanced applications of derivatives and integrals while taking the class. To make the transition into Math 1B a little easier, I was planning on purchasing the book for 1A to practice over the summer.

My problem is, I'm not entirely certain which textbook it is. The course pages for both 1A and 1B list "Single Variable Calculus - Early Transcendentals for UC Berkeley" by Stewart as the textbook, so it appears that both classes use the same textbook, much like my high school. Assuming this is true, I would very much like to purchase one book with which to practice 1A with over the summer and then use in 1B during the fall. Would this be possible? It also appears that they use an edition specific to UC Berkeley. Does anyone know if this is true, or if any (up-to-date) copy off Amazon would work? There are several books on the Cal Bookstore, but this seems to be the best match: Single Variable Calculus - Early Transcendentals for UC Berkeley. Can anyone verify if this is the actual textbook one or both classes use, and if not, point me to the right one (and if possible, a corresponding solutions book)?

Thank you all very much for your help, and I apologize for the wordy questions. Thanks!

If you go to [Home Page - Online Schedule Of Classes](http://schedule.berkeley.edu) and look up Math 1A, Math 1B, and Math H1B for Fall 2011, there will be a “View Books” link in each lecture listing. All of them (3 lectures of Math 1A, 2 lectures of Math 1B, one lecture of Math H1B) list the following:

You may want to check with the Math department to verify whether the 6th edition or the new 7th edition that you found will be used.

Also, here are some useful Math department pages:

Thanks for the advice. I saw those Math Department pages; they don’t give a version number (and if you proceed to the Econ page, it apparently only gives credit to those who score a 3 or 4, must be a typo). I think I’ll hold off buying a book for now, but does anyone know whether the seventh edition will be acceptable (I don’t remember seeing the sixth edition on the Cal Book store). Thank you for the help, and any further insight is much appreciated.
