If you yourself don't believe you have intelligence, then how can you think your statements about philosophy are accurate? Philosophy as a major not useful? This one guy (I don't know if you know him) was a major in philosophy as an undergrad before going on to law school, and he ended up being the 42nd president of the United States. I think he also cheated on his wife or something.

No president of the US would ever major in philosophy. The had more sense to major in something useful like law or engineering.

yes, Bill Clinton did....

along with many other famous people (Angela Davis, Pope John Paul II, etc)

*No president of the US would ever major in philosophy. *

HAHAHA oh wow Mystic, I'm glad at least you're good for a laugh once in a while

and theres plenty more buddy...

Thomas Jefferson (you might remember him, he's a fore-father, and president), Rudi Guilliani, Phil Jackson (NBA coach), Bruce Lee, Robert McNamara (former secretary of defense)

I believe there is one word for this. p\/\/3d

I don't think Gohan is for real. Must be someone having fun, trying to bait intellectuals into expending energy on posts.

By the way, it's hard for me to believe Goku actually goes to MIT. Scary!!! shiver.

On the other hand, this post will make for a great primary source for the cultural historians 100 years from now...

Wait, he goes to MIT?!?!? is ashamed

"the point is odds are in ur favor if u major in something that is career focused like nursing, pharmacy, medicine, law..."

Yes, and many people in those graduate programs got Philosophy BA degrees.....ahhhh OMG stop please.

You suck bigtime.

Thankfully, nothing this ridiculous could be anything but a joke.

yeah yeah we're all sure that gohan is nothing but a troll. Unless anyone has anything else constructive for this thread...

HAhahaha. I just read the whole thread. The troolery was pretty funny. I busted out laughing at "Quit accusing me of possessing intelligence." Too good.

I have a couple of degrees in math and agree with the statement that math and philosophy are very similar. Both require being ever vigilant in guarding against and rooting out logical errors. Philosophy involves arguing based on SOME assumptions, but SO DOES MATH (ever heard of an axiom?). Math may have applications, but at its core it is about proofs.

I just want to comment that those who think you cannot get ANYWHERE these days without an advanced degree have probably been associating with a very limited and unrepresentative portion of the population.

There may be more companies out there looking specifically for math majors than there are looking for philosophy majors, but ANYBODY coming out of college with ANY major is going to have to learn a lot on the job. And many philosophy majors have a strong ability and inclination to learn. If companies are not interested in philosophy majors as a whole, they are being short-sighted and missing out on a lot of good people.

Amen to you, good sir or madame

Majoring in Philosophy will only result in four yrs of endless blabering with the school of thought that anything is possible....
Philosophy is just an interpretation of everything/nothing unlike other fields which are definitive & have better usualbility in daily life !

so majoring in Philosphy think twice, initally it will be very appealing to a novice but in th end you will be left with nothin but emptiness...

All people with SSJ names are the same person, as evidenced by their earlier posts on other threads.

Python, have you been a philosophy major or taken philosophy classes? Please expound on this feeling of "emptiness" that philosophy majors seem to be left with "nothin but."

And god forbid anyone accuse Mystic Gohan of possessing intelligence. Perfectly understandable mistake though; maybe in a couple of years he can learn to correctly use three, or even four syllable words.

bhah,
philosophers tend to indulge in all kind of cognitive acrobatics and finally they come up with nothing but intepretations which is rather inconclusive, thats the nature of philosophy.

And if u think philosophy can be best pursued thru' pedagogical study then i guess all the classes you sat thru' have been a ***kin waste !

As a trade, a cobbler can serve the society better than a philosopher.
But indeed its a wonderfull sport to indulge in, a cerebreal reverie.

Yeah python, what good are all the discoveries that have ever happened, considering that philosophy and science used to be synonymous, and that all of the discoveries of science are essentially philosophical studies. Please stop acting so ignorant about philosophy.

Not to change the subject (too much, anyways), but if one were to double major in math and philosophy, what cannot that person do?

From philosophy, cannot a person then study political science, internatioanl studies, sociology, and religious studies in graduate school? From math, cannot a person then study economics, statistics, and some engineering and physical sciences, with the appropriate electives, in graduate school?

Actually, joshjmgs, a lot of graduate level political science these days is more math than philosophy.

The only current segment of political science that remains firmly in the philosophy camp these days in theory. Otherwise, political science is actually a lot of math and a lot of data crunching.
