I'm wondering what mathematics research looks like, what is currently being worked on, etc. Just want to take a look, and then I'll see where I stand. Anyway, anyone here have suggestions for journals that would be a good place to start? Or another way I can see what is going on in the field?

Thanks.

I don't know of any specifics, but my 6th grade math teacher told us about this whole book of supposedly "unsolvable" math problem that if you solved one you'd be like famous.

...

Yes, I do remember random things.

Probably referring to these?:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clay_Mathematics_Institute#Millennium_Prize_Problems
$1 mil if you can solve any of them. Includes the Riemann (zeta) hypothesis. I'd love to do that. :-)

I'm looking for news-ish. What mathematicians are currently working on, what published mathematics looks like, what fields have lots of people working on them, what research in each field is like, etc. Thanks.

Ahhh.

Now those I don't know. XD math is FAR from my favorite subject.

The Monthly of the Mathematical Association of America

http://www.maa.org/pubs/monthly.html

is accessible to nonmathematicians (like me) and exposes you to some of what mathematical research looks like. The MAA is a more teaching-oriented than research-oriented organization, but the MAA journals do include research articles. The American Mathematical Society journals

http://www.ams.org/journals/

are more research-oriented and often very cutting-edge.

Very much appreciated. They look like what I'm looking for, but... it appears they cost money. :( Tragic, really. Any free ones out there?

Most college libraries will have at least the basic journals, and at some you might even be able to circulate back issues for just the cost of a special privilege card at that library (which shouldn't cost much, and might not cost anything).
